Georgia Tech scientists provided a detailed explanation of how the jeweled beetle Chrysina gloriosa creates the striking colors using a unique helical structure that reflects light of two specific colors.

A cholesteric liquid crystalline material, which self-assembles into a complex arrangement of polygonal shapes each less than 10 microns in size, causes interference within reflected light resulting in bright green light with a wavelength of 530 nanometers mixed with yellow light in a wavelength of 580 nanometers.

Say whaaaaat? All that cholesteric liquid crystal jargon was a bit lost on me, but after reading the new release I think I've got a nugget I can understand. These scientists are looking at these bugs because their shells produce effects that we'd like to be able to recreate in small electronic devices like laptops and ipods.

I still don't really get what circular polarization is....off to the internets for some reading.

In getting my degree in physics education I took a class in advanced optics. I gave up when they explained stuff like circular polarization.

This reminds me of when I found a shiny green tortoise beetle on the shore of Lake Itasca. Note that the bug creates this shiny color. Upon the beetle's death(we were pinning), much of the color disappeared. By the way, if you want to see some beautiful bugs, look up tortoise beetles.
