Today,
"New Caledonian crows are among only a handful of species on the planet that have been shown to use tools. They use twigs to fish out beetle larvae from dead trees. Reporting in Science, Christian Rutz and colleagues explore why the birds evolved to have this rare trait."

This is really fascinating. It was particularly interesting to see that a crow, isolated in a lab, would use a tool--but not, at least in the case shown, to be rewarded with food. I know at the end of the video the narrator notes we shouldn't equate tool use with intelligence, but what does tool use among crows indicate when it doesn't secure food? Curiosity? Boredom and a desire for play? Or might the crow have been hungry and thought it was going to get a treat at the bottom of that glass?
