CocaineThe Economist has an interesting graph of cocaine prices around the world. It hits a high of nearly $715/gram in New Zealand, $110/gram in the USA, and only $2/gram in Columbia where most of the world's cocaine is grown.
But in case you're tempted by the high market value of this illegal drug, Gene pointed out another revealing economics/statistics story a couple months ago about, the worst job in America. Drug dealing makes Alaskan crab fishing seems safe.

Here in Costa Rica, Perico (Cocaine) costs 3500-4000 colones (7-8 bucks) a gram in San Jose and about 2500-3500 colones (5-7 bucks) a gram in Alajuela. If you go to the touristy areas like Jaco Beach (oh my god I get a head ache just thinking about the price there) it costs about 20000-40000 colones ($40-$80) PER GRAM. But now that I think about it, thats still CHEAP compared to most places.
All I know is it was nothing to go buy 10 grams at a time. Now I am devoutedly attending Cocaine Anonymous and am doing great.
For all you junkies out there, it SUCKS HARD CORE to quit (while youre quitting) but its SO AMAZING when you quit that itmakes up for the hell you go through to quit. QUIT NOW WHILE YOU CAN!!! (No, I am not a perfect coke free saint yet but I have made it a LONG way and am not giving up!)
Would the price of cocaine be cheaper in Lima, Peru since it is a major producer while Costa Rica is just a transport route?
I am curious about this myself. It seems the quoted prices in Costa Rica are 1/2 of what they are in Lima, Peru (San Borja, San Isidro, Miraflores).
In lima, it is approx. 10$/gram for great stuff.
20-30$ in cuzco.

According to this article, once you adjust for inflation, cocaine in the US costs 1/10th what it did in the 1980s.

i suppose there must be major price variations in the U.S. cause 110 for a G...? that's a joke. i live in Austin, Texas and 40 bucks is the standard price. ha, and if it's true about new zealand's prices...man, that blows.
just drink scotch
Prices in London seem to have dropped. The article, however, cites "soaring demand" as the cause of the price drop. That makes no sense--rising demand should increase prices. I think what they meant was that increased demand is an effect of the suddenly lower prices, not the other way around.
Hey, these people are taking drugs....do you think their actions should make any sense?
That was back in 2007, I am sure today these prices are a lot higher, drugs aren't the most affordable substances in the world but still paradoxically they can be reached even by people that apparently can't afford them, that's an interesting mechanism that defies the laws of economy. People in addict rehabilitation are probably more familiar with the current cocaine prices. Does anybody here have any update?
