Yeah, I almost always try to recycle. I also try to just not buy those plastic bottles in the first place when possible.

i agree w/ bryan that i try not to use/buy plastic bottles/cans of pop, but when i do, i try to recycle as much as possible. i actually helped to start a recycling program at my work--we now recycle plastic bottles and cans and have gathered over 70 pounds of aluminum since March when we started!

one thing that really bugs me is that (most) gas stations-a logical place to clean things out of your vehicle-don't have a place to put recycling! i try to bring it home, but sometimes end up throwing a bottle/can away there :(

Scrappy's is on 2nd Street N, in Minneapolis.

Here in St. Paul, recycling is free but you pay for trash removal. The more you recycle, the smaller trash can you need and the cheaper your trash service.

A couple of years ago, I studied recycling for a project and was amazed to learn that less than half of the aluminum cans consumed in the U.S. each year were recycled-even though they are easy to recycle and have real monetary value. Cans made from raw aluminum cost us a tremendous amount of energy compared to those made from recycled aluminum. The rate for recycling plastic water bottles was a lot worse than aluminum cans. Not buying cans or bottles of water or soda in the first place is the best choice.

Here's a little Sesame Street video about can recycling.

I was actually looking for a can recycling video from the PBS show "3-2-1 Contact." I only remember two "how things are made" videos from my childhood: that one, about cans, and one from Mr Roger's Neighborhood about making crayons. I found lots and lots of references on recycling program websites to an episode of 3-2-1 Contact called "The Rotten Truth," but I couldn't find any of the video online.

We recycle a bunch of stuff at our house including plastic, aluminum, glass, junk mail, newspapers, magazines and cardboard. We sometimes re-use groceries bags but we also have three recycling bins in our alley. The city of Minneapolis gives a recycling credit each month which appears on (and reduces) our monthly utility bill.
