Nobody knows why, but since 1990 the Earth's surface has been getting brighter. This means that more sunlight and heat is reaching the ground. Before 1990, the Earth was under "global dimming", or a loss of 2 to 3 percent of sunlight every year. It is not known what effects the increased sunlight might have on the Earth. Some people believe that global dimming has counteracted global warming in the past and now the increased sunlight will accelerate the global warming. However, there are many variables involved, making such a linear relationship unlikely. Scientists are unsure of both the causes and effects of the changing amounts sunlight. The New York Time has more information on this subject.
