There’s a new baby bear in town. Knut is old news. Gross, creepy, old news.

Remember little Knut? The baby polar bear rejected by his mother, and hand-reared by the Berlin Zoo? It was a controversial move by the zoo—many thought that it would have been better to let nature run its course (i.e., let little Knut bite it)—but it paid off in massive cuteness dividends. The world got to watch little Knut frolic through his darling childhood, and then tumble into his frightening adolescence. Now Knut is acting like a perfectly normal adult bear, which it turns out is really upsetting for people.

Knut, the Britney Spears of the Berlin Zoo, has been caught…Murdering fish!

It seems that Knut has been catching live carp out of his moat (carp are really where it’s at these days), and killing them in front of visitors. Critics say that the fish should never have been put in the enclosure in the first place, but the zoo has pointed out that they were only there to eat algae in the moat. Whatever the reason, the carp were “senselessly murdered,” as one German news website reported the story. It’s not an easy life, Knut, and the fact that you’ve now got a younger, cuter, less screwed up cub out there, gunning for your spotlight won’t make it any easier.

That’s right, there’s a new fluffy little pile of cute out there now, making Knut look more and more like a hideous, fishy-smelling monster every day (Britney Spears can totally sympathize). Last week the Nuremberg Zoo debuted little Flocke, a loveable, huggable little puffball, who will never grow into one of the world’s largest predators, and would certainly never do anything as awful as fish murder.

Here’s a video of little Flocke, doing what she does best.

that picture of the baby polar bear is so cute! but dang calling that polar bear a murderer. that's a going a little too far right? Knut is just doing what all wild polar bear does like kill to catch food. but that's just my opinion. and if knut was "murdering" or killing that carp it was the zoo's fault for putting the carps there in the first place even if they were there to 'algea in the moat'.

Its not murder its his nature weather he was brought up by humans or not he will always have his heritage and the kind of animal you can not expect a polar bear to tame down to the hand that feeds it you feed them fish anyway so whats the difference between you feeding him fish or him doing it himself.

Knut is always darling Knut. You're psycho to try to get traffic by making a bad news for Knut.

I take it all back. I did a little research on polar bears since writing this post, and I found a couple of interesting facts.

1) It turns out that pretty much every polar bear cub eventually gets bigger, so I suppose I shouldn't hold this against Knut.
2) While polar bears don't really catch fish in the wild, it looks like they are actually fed a lot of fish in zoos, so I guess it kind of made sense that Knut felt like getting his fish on.
3) Supposedly animals don't have much of an ability to perceive cruelty or act intentionally cruel. Knut probably didn't even mean to be mean, if you follow. Who knew?

I hate to admit it, but I shouldn't have given this little bear such a hard time. I promise, though, that the next time I write about polar bears I'll read very carefully, think through all the given information, and report responsibly.

JGordon

I'm sure zoos are very conscious of the fact that if they fed polar bears seals (their prefered diet) there would be a lot of upset zoo visitors.

Well in my opinion as a zoo lover, zoo visitors would be more upset if the polar bears were sad and upset because they couldn't eat what they are used to. If that happend, the polar bears would be too upset to do anything which would lead to less visitors.
