In the spirit of bold adventure and practical economics, two scientist are proposing the first manned mission to Mars be a one-way trip. It would be cheaper and could happen much sooner than a round-trip journey. The suggestion appears in the the Journal of Cosmology. NASA's not so enthusiastic about it, but I think it's a great idea. I even know a couple people I'd like to volunteer.

Researchers in England have found that a primitive area of the brain is more active when people are doing or trying something new. This could explain many things, from thrill-seeking to trying new products to the seven-year itch.

It took 49 days for two recent Chaska High School graduates to canoe all the way from Chaska up the Minnesota River, down the Red River, across Lake Winnipeg and finally to Hudson Bay. You can get all the details here at their website/blog. It's an incredible adventure.
