South Pole Station

South Pole Station

The current station, shown here, was built in 1975. It's too small to house the number of scientists who want to work at the Pole during the "summer"—the warmer months from October through December—and it's also being buried by drifting snow. A new station, which will sit on stilts, is under construction nearby. (Photo by Michael Hoffman, courtesy National Science Foundation)
