Carmen Van Kerckhove is co-founder and president of New Demographic, an anti-racism training company. She travels to schools and companies around the country to present workshops about race and racism. She also hosts the podcast Addicted to Race, about America’s obsession with race, and edits the blog Racialicious, about the intersection of race and pop culture.

“We all hold racist beliefs, whether conscious or subconscious. Why? Because we’ve been inundated throughout our lives with racist stereotypes perpetuated by the media and other social institutions. Having racist beliefs doesn’t make you an evil person. But we each need to work on ourselves to overcome these beliefs.”

She links examples from pop culture to historical stereotypes to help clients see how and when those stereotypes got started, why it’s so difficult to break away from them, and how they’re harmful to all of us.
