Iron mine near Virginia, Minnesota

Iron mine near Virginia, Minnesota

Red rocks with traces of iron line the side of this abandoned, flooded mine near Virginia (north of Duluth). The iron that supported Minnesota’s mining industry came from undersea volcanoes more than two billion years ago.

From undersea volcanoes in this picture? Or, was the iron really precipitated from a shallow sea? It is a sedimentary deposit.

Those lakes near the mine fields are really beautiful especially in the morning when the sun rises and sets. The views are breath taking and I wish I could live up there. Even though I spend two weeks up there a year it still ain't enough. The water is freezing but it jsut makes you wanna hang on to your tube longer. The only downfall about enjoying the water up there is that you get bloodshot eyes because of the iron.

The taconite & iron ore mines in northern MN are spectacular to see in person & aren't even that far away. Go see them when you can.
