Saint Paul geology sculpture

Saint Paul geology sculpture

This sculpture on the north side of the High Bridge pays tribute to St. Paul’s geological and architectural past. It’s made of limestone blocks that formed at the bottom of an ancient sea, and which were later used as the foundations for some of the first houses in the city.

These stones are from the Platteville Limestone which formed in the Ordovician (~400 million years ago) Epicontinental Sea. This sea washed all the way up to central Minnesota at times, which is why you can find marine fossils in these rocks. I am also guessing that this is why the sculpture is shaped like a wave to evoke a wave in the sea.
