MY FOSSIL STORY...
this one time i was digging a hole in my backyard, i wanted to see wat i could find. i didnt find any animal parts or mygreat uncle billy bob. i did however find, a very interesante rock. i whacked it wit a hammer for a few hours. it wouldn't crack, so i started crying ans decided to throw it out of my window. no, i did not crush my dog wit that rock, i did however manage to break it open. no, gold did not come out, nor animals. but a most amazing sight met my lil -eyes. it was one of those rocks with purple crystal-y things in them. i was like O.M.G!!!
It was average. Not what I'd say super great. Now if... it was a huge giant fossils that would have cool.I'm not saying finding fossils isn't cool I'm just saying finding big fossils would have cooler.
I went fossil hunting with my class n we had lots of fun there were lots of fossils too!there was also a place where water ran down the rocks n we got wet

I think that if we don't look at the fossils we won't learn about the environment around us! I think that when we explore rocks and fossils we explore our environment and our culture and ourselves!!!!!
even if people were more "respectfull" to the enviorment the world would still be the same. no matter what you do we are going to need the things we make be that paper gas or food.
thtz not true. if more people cared about our planet it wood be so much different. the roads wouldbe clean andmsafe. the world would last longer for being healthy. plus the air would be cleaner witch wood be better for plants and animals. tdid you no tht only 2.8% of the earths water is fresh? its true. if we start being"respectful" to the earth then we will have more fresh water and cleaner air and nice soil. so things would be a whole lot diffrent!!!!!!!!
Once I found a fossilized fish that seemed to have appendages (other than fins) in, I think it was Duluth, well it was in Northern Minnesota, near a rocky cliff that over-looked a lake. It had one of those over-hanging arms that gave a small tunnel in which we could walk.
I went paintballing in the woods and i found six fossils and took them to my class and got extra credit so if you found some fossils take them to school and you might get some extra credit. Happy digging!
i just find cool rocks i don't search for them a lot but when i find them i like them. I have about 10 arrowheads and a lot of other rocks. One of the looks like a half a moon smiling it is really cool.
One day I was in Arizona and I found a really cool rock. It looked like a oreo cookie. It was a oval shaped black rock with a white line in the middle of it.
i was once on a tour with my family and we whent down to the beach and looked for rocks with fossils in it. i found a couple of rocks in them. it was a whole lot of fun, my dad didn't find any rocks though! hehehehehe
I found some very interesting rock samples on the shores of Lake Supierior near Grand Marais. The rocks are smooth and has red, white, or blue crystals in them that resemble large grains of rice. They are very unique indeed
We recently went to see the banded iron formation in northern Minnesota. As we stood there, gazing at it, a wolf walked by down the road-in boad daylight! It was uber cool.
I found a 2-4 pound unformed tube agate that i almost didnt take from the pit because i didnt know what it was at first but i took it anways and brought it to agate days and one table said it was the best thing they seen at agate days and offered me 400 dollars for it!
One time i found these really cool rocks at a football game at my town. Two were red and the rest were silver. They were SO COOL! I think everyone should be able to experience rock hunting as I did. Good luck to all you ROCK HUNTERS!
I go to Duluth a lot and they have tons of cool rocks. We go on walks and little bay, but there are hauge rocks there.I find tons of granit. Some of the rocks I find is sandstone, bluerite, tanand purple querts.Bye!

This Museum is the best. It fills our minds with fun and interesting facts about allsorts of things! There are all sorts of neat exibits and things to look at. This is always cool for me to come here and learn more then I already knew. It is so awsome!!!!!!!!
in 2006 my family went up to chaska to search for rocks, climb rocks, and just to plain old have fun. we got to climb rocks for hours and i even found a perfectly heart shaped rock. it was so cool that when i found it i yelled '' hey mom, dad i found a cool rock. 'come here! and even until this day i have this rock and still hold on to it today. i love searching for rocks and climbing them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking when I was in the Science Museum how weird it would be to have my body in Body Worlds and everyone see it. But I guess it would not matter because I would not know. Because I would be dead.
to museum
I thought this museum was really disgusting and wroung !!!!! The evendence that they are teaching everyone is fake and wroung!!!! they should post all the evendince not only evendence that supports there thery they shold tell all the facts..not only theroys about evoluion......
Soo next time u make a musuem it should be about technoloy and carrer choices for young and how u can change the future.
Mad and Angry ought to learn to spell, and perhaps should give some thought to things before spouting off about that which she knows little of. If you don't care for science, why did you come?
Well, I don't mind bad spelling so much but the museum isn't going to change it's focus away from accepted science. While we want to welcome everyone to learn about science we aren't going to compromise our message based on differing beleifs that are not supported by evidence.
Evolution is on of the key pillars on which our understanding of biology is based and therefore and important aspect of our museum. Read more in the Science Museum's official position on evolution.
I thought I found a piece of coal on a trail in the woods, once. It was all black and had rough spots all over. A lot of parts on it were shiny, but not all of it .
Went rock hunting around I-35 and several different ancient aquatic shell and animal fossils. Real good place to observe the many bands in the rock and see the color difference.
State parks, especially the great ones in MN, are great places to look for rocks, especially around the places where not many people hike. Gooseberry falls and and the Superior shore are amazing displays of different types of rock.
When I wasabout 5 or six I went to the brick yards with my Dad. It was so awsome . I found 106 FOSSILS. For the hundreth day of school and Monroe elmentry school I brought all my Fossils
well when i used to go to mounds park elemetary we allways used to have a parade our whole school would walk up to mounds park and play there but when i got in 6th grade me and my friends went across the street and went to see the rocks but the were big we were to scared to go down it because we thought we would get hurt but ne ways you should visit this spot its really interesting!!!!!!Peace out ♥ BrItTaNy
I HAVE COLLECTED ROCKS FROM LAKE SUPERIOR AND EVERY ALL OVER THE NORTH SHORE. I hAve sandstone, basalt, and many others. I enjoy collecting rocks. Rocks help me understand how the earth was formed.
i found this multicolored rock when i was searching in my lake for my swim trunks. it was like the coolest rock i've ever seen in my entire life. It was colors of a sunset and made me feel deep emotions when i found it buryed underneath the sand in my lake. i found my trunks too..
I was in northern Minnesota hunting rocks on the Iron Range. It had been weeks, and no game to be found. Watching rocks from my stand was getting dull, believe it or not. I couldn't. Just then, a fourteen point fairly sized specimen of granite came my way. This was it: the culmination of my efforts were finally coming around. I aimed my 12 gauge shot gun directly into the granite's sparkly facade. Just then it saw me! I managed to knick it's side, but it tumbled away. Luckily I was able to follow its tracks into the woods and finish the job. Three days later I came home with the granite fully gutted and ready to serve. It was my best rock hunting experience that I can remember.
Funny funny, but I wouldn't like to see what taking a shotgun to a granite face would do. Very unsafe for you and your hunting companions. Probably best to leave the shotgun at home when foraging for rocks. But I like this cute story.
Amazingly enough, it is legal to sell fossils to a science museum, as long as the fossils that you want to sell were legally collected. In the United States this means that they have to come from private property, with permission from the owner. Fossils found on public lands (like in State Parks, or on Bureau of Land Management or State lands) cannot be bought and sold at all, and can't even be collected without a special permit. The problem with a commercial collecting operation (where people are buying and selling fossils) is that selling them often removes them from potential study or exhibition. That is the primary reason that museums will occasionally buy important fossils (like Sue, the famous Tyrannosaurus rex fossil that the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago bought from Sotheby's) - it is, at times, the only way to keep really important, unique specimens available to the public, and to the research community.
Thanks for the great question!

I was on vacation and the hotel I stayed at had a rock-hounding trip to a loacal beach on Lake Superior and Iwent and there were really a lot of colorful and interesing rocks.

GO DALLAS STARS:]
I went up to Duluth many times in my life and I spend days on the beach walking up and down collecting rocks. The last time I went was with my second and third cousins and we spent all of the 3 or 4 days up there at a campground across the road from Lake Superior and at least 5 times a day we would go to the rocky beach and rock hunt. I found some really good treasures and displayed them on my windowsill when I got home. My favorites were the ones that sparkled when they were wet and in the sun. I can't wait till the next time I go up there cuz I wanna find a superior agate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Roxy Cowgirl ( or barbie if you ask my classmates )
I live in the country so my neighbors are far away compared to living in a rural community. That's good for them cuz sometimes they get downwind of our cattle barn but anyways I was walking to the neighbors and I found an arrowhead like the ones that indians used and stuff. It was really coolio. I was gunna tie it on a stick like a spear but instead my 2 younger sisters got ahold of it and I have no clu where it went. i was bummed. BUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the grannite that we have in our state. Its cool. I like eggits too, even though we don't have many around here. I love minnestoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my grandparents have a cottage at the lake, and my mom takes long walks on the beach and picks up all kinds of rocks and stones that we use for all kinds of crafts! i am so glad i can be a part of it.
when me and my sister were at our old house we thought that we found a huge t rex bone by our house and we worked on it forever but then we found out it was only a piece of concrete lol
i have been doing rocks in 3rd grade and if you cant break it into any more pieces it is a mineral.some rocks have soe color on it.some rocks can be small and some big it can still look really cool still. if you use a magafinglass for small pieces. when you look so close at it.it will look so cool i did it in 3rd grade.also it might look like something you seen before or it might not you never know.it depends what it is .good bye

this one time i was digging in my backyard for fossils and i found the cutest little mole, i named the mole molesworth and we got to know each other very well. well as most people know whenever there is a mole, there's usually a fossil somewhere nearby, so i kept digging. me and molesworth discovered the magical underground land of fancypants. in fancypants land you can do whatever you want all the time as long as you're wearing fancy pants. i of course, had the fanciest of all the pants, but molesworth had to turn back because he wasn't wearing any pants=( but then i ventured further and further into the wonderful land of fancypants and mingled with the local fancypants residents. it turns out that fancypants land has the fanciest pants of all the land. this is when i got very freaked out and left. i dont' have any money for wonderful fancy pants. especially not the fanciest pants of all the land. sometimes i still dream about fancypants land, i also dream about molesworth, i haven't seen him since. one day i will return to fancypants land and buy molesworth the fanciest of all the pants. but until then, i will continiue to file my paperwork and daydream about fancy adventures.
I remember at recess (at my school) I would always look for fossils in the rocks. (I was the new kid so I did not have much to do anyway) I usually found old beehive pieces but one day I actually found a trilobyte! I was so happy that I almost showed everybody in the school!
ONCE AT MY DADS HOUSE I WAS WALKING AROUND THE FARM AND I FOUND SOME ANIMAL BONES AND I BROUGHT THEM INSIDE AND MY DAD SAID THEY WERE PROBABLY DOG BONES FROM THE PEOPLE WHO USED TO LIVE IN THIS HOUSE AND THEIR DOG DIED SO THEY BURIED IT AND IT ADVENTUILY CAME BACK UP TO GROUND LEVEL.

I have experienced many types of fossils, minerals and rocks in my time as captain of the U.S.S Enterprise. We have an archive of species, plants and minerals stored aboard the ship. I like to flip through them once in a while to reminisce on my past adventures. I hope that every young explorer that reads this will be encouraged to make their own discoveries in the final frontier that they have yet to discover.
Sincerely,
Captain Jean Luke Picard
U.S.S Enterprise

The most interesting rocks i have seen are the ones that the SMM parking lot have been carved into. Just proves to show you don't have to go far to find interesting rocks!
me and my family went rock hunting at grand marias. we saw fireworks and lots of great rocks along the shore. some we brought back home others we threw in the lake. we found rocks that were pink, blue, and many other colors. my mommy and daddy were there and went to the duluth zoo. i want to go back this coming summer.
I enjoy going thru the caves in SE MN--where it is the Karst geology. It's amazing how many miles of tunnels there are underground. You can never guess that by looking at the surface land!
Im pretty crazy, and luv rock collecting...My favorite rock is eggates and luv searching for them! I just saw the movie Alps and want to be a rock climber person now.=)
We were up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. We stayed at a bed and breakfest last summer in 2007. We came to Canada 1, 2, or 3 years ago to mine Amythist at an amythist mine and we mined for a couple hours and then we left back to town.
on june 6th my family is going to alaska. WE are going to swim under a glacier. we might go dog sleding. We will go on a walk up a mountain we might look for cool rockes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was never interested in all of this stuff before but seeing the dinosaur fossils and the other ancient fossils made me realize that it isn't all that bad. thank you for your exhibit and your time.
well this one time when i was in 3rd grade [last year] we went on a field trip to the country. it was really cool and we saw ALOT of rocks. i picked some up but my teacher told me to leave them there in their natural enviornment. i want to go back someday and get them. i just really love rocks.
i looove carrots!! :) Carrots r nummy. does anybody really want to eat "genetically modified carrots"? I know i don't! Nobody should be messing with our food supply. people already aren't eating enough vegies as our food is now! and me and my buds say, and i quote, " Nobody should mess with our food. What if some to-be mom ate "genetarically modified carrots" and their baby had a birth defect?! " end quote.
On my way to the airshow in oshkosh, wisconsin, my family stopped at a HUGE cliff of sedimentary rock ( I think it was sandstone ). We climbed on it a whole bunch and it was covered ( at least the lower part ) with spraypaint.
wheni was living along the mississipi river i found a fossil or i thought it was a fossil but it really wasn't and i got dissapointed. But I stillsecretly think that it was a fossil and even if it wasn't i wish it was
once i found a bone that i could not identify so when i got back i asked my s.s. teacher and he said not my problem. i felt so bad i dug a hole and put it back.
Me and some friends were looking for cool rocks outside of my school and we found something that looked like a fossilised shell. We had just finished a fossil unit and we knew that the shell was a mold.
My mother has a collection of fossils in our residence and they are very interesting and many questions arise in my mind whenever i observe these fossils. i am very exquisetly intrigued by them and am curious about the origin of these fossils. i recommend you all to take up the study of fossils. i entered this world exactly nine years ago and i have gained a lot of knowledge already. -Theresa, nine year old.
My family goes rock hunting every time that we are in northern Minnesota. We love looking for little treasures to keep as mementos from our various trips.
I was out fishing with my dad, we were in one of the woody places around here, & i got bored of actually fishing, so i decidedto go up into the woods and look for some rocks. I found a cool-looking white one & i picked it up. I kept finding a bunch of ones that looked similar, and with all of my knowledge from CSI (exhibit coming soon YAY!! :D) i figured out that they were bones. i eventually found almost all & discovered it was the carcus of a bald eagle. Way COOL! :D
i once found REAL GOLD!!!!! it was really awesome. i took it to a place where they value rocks. it was worth big $$$$$$!!! my mom wouldn't let me keep it though. yup yup yup. so that's my story.
I was fossil hunting on a cliff near Paris, France, and I found a prehistoric footprint fossil.
I turned it in at the museum near there, and it is now a top display at that museum.
I went rock hunting at summer camp a few years ago and it was really awesome. We didn't find a whole lot, but the experience itself and how much our instructor knew was incredibly amazing
Well, my rock hunting adventure took place in Marinco Cave in Minnesota. I was in a team, scouts if you want to call us, and we discovered lots of cool fossils. I thought it wasawesome and so much fun!!

we where just about ready to climb the mountain,,,,,when all of a sudden a cougar JUMPED out at us!!!! Then we started to run to our orginal destination, where we were going to dig for rocks!!! and we found all the geodes you could imagin!! It was amazing!!! So good luck to you all and have fun looking and digging for rocks! But most inportantly BE SAFE!!!
once I went fossil hunting with my friends at Ice Age camp and I found a lot of fossils. We found fish bones and some teeth. We found so many that we had to put them in a bag.
our site is at our grandma's house out on her land there is a pit and there are tons of rocks to look for if you get permission maybe you could go look for yourself!: )
My favorite place to rock hunt is in Lincolnville Maine where we stayed on vacation. I found all kinds of rock but my mom and I liked the shale the most!
I go rock hunting all the time and once I found a fossil of some sort of sea creature and I believe it is part of the great big dinosaur that used to roam the earth called Icthyosaurus. It is a very amazing fossil and I wish I could someday share it with the world. I found the fossil on the rock sides of Lake Superior, near Duluth, Minnesota.

one earlier blogger mentioned the badlands in the dakotas, that is true how it's a good place for rock hunting. went there on a fmaily vacation when i was younger. there was even one place especially devoted to that pastime, in the western part of south dakota like murdo or wall, not all that far from mt. rushmore. part of the tour spoke about iron pyrite, aka 'fool's gold'.
I went to a fossil hunting b-day party for my friend Rachel we dug up a lot of intresting fossils from the river and her brother collected lots of sandstone. Know maybe my name will still be there.
i go camping everymonth and in Februrary of 2008 we were down at Cannon Falls and we were hiking up to this hugecliffside when we came across this really cool lokking rock. i went to pick up the rock (which probally had a diameter of lik 2.5 feet) and underneath it was this white thing sticking up out of the ground a bit. we dug it up and it turned out to be an arm bone to some prehistoric rodent. it was pretty cool. :)
When I was smaller I loved to collect smooth stones I found on the roads and at beaches. I used an ice-cream tin to house my rocks. Sometimes, I chose some of them and painted them with paint out of paint tubes. Amazingly enough, though I'm 10 and started when I was 5, I still house ever member of my now mostly-broken collection.
we moved from indiana there are geodes there that are really neat. you can crack them open and see the crystals. we also found some fossils a couple of them were coral and a relative of the modern day starfish! It is amazing to think that Indiana was covered by the oceans!
One day me and my cousin were rock hunting. After a while we got board. We were by lake superior. We went closer to shore and we saw a small shiny rock. I piked it up and we thoughout it look like gold.
One intriguing (is that how you spell it?) place to hunt for rocks is Riverbend Nature Center in Faribault. It offers nature science classes and has lots of cliffs carved by the river. In addition, there are hundreds of acres in the nature center. But there is one small catch;
you can't take anything home. However, you may take pictures. I still have fun doing it, even if I don't get to keep the finds! :)
how long do octopuses ussually live or eat?
one day when i was walking,i saw a dinasor. it was a t-rex! we are just kidding! but we did see a really mean dog once. and i was so freaked out. i turned into a tree.
then when i got home, i listened to tree music! it was really weird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i went to the brick yards whith my school this year and we saw huge fociles that was cool

I would think it was cool to but don't you mean fossils ?
when i lived in my other house we would always get a bunch of rocks in our front yard and sometimes on our drivway because of landscaping. when the rocks would come they were usually fossils and i found one that looked like a honey-comb and a beehive!!!!!!!! It was really cool!

kool
It was average. Not what I'd say super great. Now if... it was a huge giant fossils that would have cool.I'm not saying finding fossils isn't cool I'm just saying finding big fossils would have cooler.
I went fossil hunting with my class n we had lots of fun there were lots of fossils too!there was also a place where water ran down the rocks n we got wet
wow that sounds soooooo cool! How big were the fociles?
thats so cool you acually found a sceleton . Most people search for many years before they find a fossil.
cool
one time me and my 31 class. went on a big hike and found and saw alot of cool fociles. which i thought was pretty cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ttfn!
I found a sea shell in my yard and I live nowhere near the sea!!
My cass went to a brick yard to we foung tins of them

i think people should be more respectful to the envaierment.and should learn about us and our caulture!
I think that if we don't look at the fossils we won't learn about the environment around us! I think that when we explore rocks and fossils we explore our environment and our culture and ourselves!!!!!
I'm with you it's sad how people can destroy places and vandilise them
even if people were more "respectfull" to the enviorment the world would still be the same. no matter what you do we are going to need the things we make be that paper gas or food.

YEa i think people should take care ofit more!!!
Six fossils, eh?
That's amazing.
I myself haven't found any fossils, but I'd love to!
Anyway, maybe I should paintball in the woods so I find some fossils!
:)
I think people should hunt for rocks because they can learn different kind of rocks.
i just find cool rocks i don't search for them a lot but when i find them i like them. I have about 10 arrowheads and a lot of other rocks. One of the looks like a half a moon smiling it is really cool.

The badlands in north and south dakota. They are beautiful and you would enjoy them alot!
One day I was in Arizona and I found a really cool rock. It looked like a oreo cookie. It was a oval shaped black rock with a white line in the middle of it.

I Whent rock climbing one summer it was lots of fun! I think places like that should be saved.
i was once on a tour with my family and we whent down to the beach and looked for rocks with fossils in it. i found a couple of rocks in them. it was a whole lot of fun, my dad didn't find any rocks though! hehehehehe
I found some very interesting rock samples on the shores of Lake Supierior near Grand Marais. The rocks are smooth and has red, white, or blue crystals in them that resemble large grains of rice. They are very unique indeed

I was thinking when I was in the Science Museum how weird it would be to have my body in Body Worlds and everyone see it. But I guess it would not matter because I would not know. Because I would be dead.
wow i had an experience of a lifetime up on those rocky mountains whoa scary scary don't go on them alone
Read more in the Science Museum's official position on evolution.
how rude
I thought I found a piece of coal on a trail in the woods, once. It was all black and had rough spots all over. A lot of parts on it were shiny, but not all of it .
i like the minerals inside the rocks and how they are all shiny
Minerals are shiny because of luster. Luster is how rocks shine against the sun.
one time I found a fossilized leaf inside a rock. my brother found it.
Went rock hunting around I-35 and several different ancient aquatic shell and animal fossils. Real good place to observe the many bands in the rock and see the color difference.

My grandparents have a dirt road that my cousin and I like to find agets on
I was in northern Minnesota hunting rocks on the Iron Range.
I LOVE ROCKS,I EVEN COLLECT ROCKS.
i go hunting for rocks and i love collecting rocks it is so fun to find out what different kinds of rocks you can find.
I WENT TO THE BLACK HILLS AND MY BROTHER FOUND A REALY COOL FOSIL. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS BUT WE THINK IT IS A BIRD FOSIL.
COOL
I bet that its not a bird fossil. it was probably just some chicken bones that someone just left and littered.
one time i went to the black hills and i was playing in the sand and found some bones. maybe they were fossils....i i dont know but i kept it.
how can you not know if its a fossil or not? its just a rock but of has imprints then it prob a fossil. smart one
Can you sell fossils to a science museum?
Thanks for the great question!

this one time i was digging in my backyard for fossils and i found the cutest little mole, i named the mole molesworth and we got to know each other very well. well as most people know whenever there is a mole, there's usually a fossil somewhere nearby, so i kept digging. me and molesworth discovered the magical underground land of fancypants. in fancypants land you can do whatever you want all the time as long as you're wearing fancy pants. i of course, had the fanciest of all the pants, but molesworth had to turn back because he wasn't wearing any pants=( but then i ventured further and further into the wonderful land of fancypants and mingled with the local fancypants residents. it turns out that fancypants land has the fanciest pants of all the land. this is when i got very freaked out and left. i dont' have any money for wonderful fancy pants. especially not the fanciest pants of all the land. sometimes i still dream about fancypants land, i also dream about molesworth, i haven't seen him since. one day i will return to fancypants land and buy molesworth the fanciest of all the pants. but until then, i will continiue to file my paperwork and daydream about fancy adventures.
thanks for listening

I have experienced many types of fossils, minerals and rocks in my time as captain of the U.S.S Enterprise. We have an archive of species, plants and minerals stored aboard the ship. I like to flip through them once in a while to reminisce on my past adventures. I hope that every young explorer that reads this will be encouraged to make their own discoveries in the final frontier that they have yet to discover.
Sincerely,
Captain Jean Luke Picard

i looove carrots!!

Dinosaurs became extinct about 65,000,000 years ago.
My family goes rock hunting every time that we are in northern Minnesota. We love looking for little treasures to keep as mementos from our various trips.
how big can a dinisor grow
Different species grew to be different sizes, anywhere from about 3 feet to almost 200 feet long!
A Dinisor can grow about ten or twenty inches.I know it small but still any dinisor can grow as long and tall as ist can.
how are fossils made
1. An animal dies.
2. It gets covered by some material -- mud, ash, silt, etc.
3. As it decays, the original bone is replaced, bit by bit, with minerals.
This explains most bone and shell fossils. There are other types of fossils as well:
Impressions, such as footprints. The mud which the footprint was made it hardens and turns to stone.
Carbonization, which accounts for many plant fossils. Most of the plant molecules break down, but the original carbon stays in place.
Mummification, where original material is preserved by conditions of extreme dryness, extreme cold, and/or lack of oxygen.
I went rock hunting and brought back a lot of calcite and quartz. I even found a ankle bone of something.
Way COOL! :D

My favorite place to rock hunt is in Lincolnville Maine where we stayed on vacation. I found all kinds of rock but my mom and I liked the shale the most!
I went fossil hunting when I was in second grade. We found a real dinasor bone.
Love love love love love,

One time I was scratching on a brick in my backyard and I found a spider that was carrying a he-uge agget. It was really cool.

one earlier blogger mentioned the badlands in the dakotas, that is true how it's a good place for rock hunting. went there on a fmaily vacation when i was younger. there was even one place especially devoted to that pastime, in the western part of south dakota like murdo or wall, not all that far from mt. rushmore. part of the tour spoke about iron pyrite, aka 'fool's gold'.
I went to a fossil hunting b-day party for my friend Rachel we dug up a lot of intresting fossils from the river and her brother collected lots of sandstone. Know maybe my name will still be there.
our basement is made out of plattville limestone !

i went to a place about an hour from rochester,mn that was great, we found shell fossels and stuff
i go camping everymonth and in Februrary of 2008 we were down at Cannon Falls and we were hiking up to this hugecliffside when we came across this really cool lokking rock. i went to pick up the rock (which probally had a diameter of lik 2.5 feet) and underneath it was this white thing sticking up out of the ground a bit. we dug it up and it turned out to be an arm bone to some prehistoric rodent. it was pretty cool. :)
i like to search for rocks with my mommy at my grandma's beach.
i really like finding fossils
This summer, I went to a brick yard to find a clay pit. I learned a lot about rocks and some people even found a fossil!!!
i like to hunt for rocks near my home in frederic wi
When I was smaller I loved to collect smooth stones I found on the roads and at beaches. I used an ice-cream tin to house my rocks. Sometimes, I chose some of them and painted them with paint out of paint tubes. Amazingly enough, though I'm 10 and started when I was 5, I still house ever member of my now mostly-broken collection.
Sweet!
You have a ton of rocks that are all different and all are in different shapes.
To me that's awsome!
we moved from indiana there are geodes there that are really neat. you can crack them open and see the crystals. we also found some fossils a couple of them were coral and a relative of the modern day starfish! It is amazing to think that Indiana was covered by the oceans!
I saw 1 of the most freakest rocks i've ever seen just now!!!!!
One day me and my cousin were rock hunting. After a while we got board. We were by lake superior. We went closer to shore and we saw a small shiny rock. I piked it up and we thoughout it look like gold.
check caves in south dakota
One intriguing (is that how you spell it?) place to hunt for rocks is Riverbend Nature Center in Faribault. It offers nature science classes and has lots of cliffs carved by the river. In addition, there are hundreds of acres in the nature center. But there is one small catch;
you can't take anything home. However, you may take pictures. I still have fun doing it, even if I don't get to keep the finds! :)
