In the New Kingdom, animals were generally not considered worthy of mumification. Hundreds of years later, however, as mumification became less exclusive and expensive, many animals, including owners' pets, were mumified. This mumified hawk may have been a hunting companion of a wealthy Egyptian concerned about what he would do for recreation in the aftelife.
