Thirteen-lined ground squirrel

Thirteen-lined ground squirrel

Notice the 13 stripes running along the whole body. This will help you from confusing this thirteen-lined ground squirrel with the chipmunk. Seen in summer: more on thirteen-lined ground squirrels.

For protein maybe? Or just out of boredom? Accidentally? (I've heard that people who sleep with their mouths open swallow an average of 3 chipmunks every night.)

Last Sunday I saw an amazing battle between a chipmunk and a cat while I was out geocaching near the St. Paul University of Minnesota campus. The chimpmunk was obviously quite tired of being played with by the cat, and the cat seemed only intereted in casing and catching the chipmunk, then letting it go to repeat. I know I should let nature take its course, but I stepped in to pet the cat to allow the chipmunk to get away. While I was petting the cat the exhaused chipmunk was about 4 feet away gasping. The cat for a second made a move at the chipmunk and the chipmunk got up on his hind legs and did the most credible put 'em up! put 'em up! thing with his "fists" I have ever seen a real animal do. It then ran up a nearby tree. Heaven's to mergatroy! Exit, stage left!

Well, it probably WAS already dead when they got it and not killed. so i don't think it really mattered especially that they are used for learning purposes

Well, that one might look a little creepier than usual as it is dead - and it's eye holes are filled with cotton. Alive, they look like this - much less creepy alive than dead, I think.

I think that, that squirrel would be quite small to be compared to those keys sitting right next to it. It is about four times the size of the keys.

Kilian Keefe says:

Chipmunks were named because they have two mating calls, one for spring and one for fall and the spring mating call sounds like "chip" kind-of high pitched and the fall mating call sounds like "monk" or "munk" and is more low-pitched than the spring mating call.
