About the scaredest I've been in a storm was when I lived in my flat-roofed basement house near Delano. A wicked storm was coming from the west. When it got really dark and windy I did not worry much. When the electricity went out I still figured no sweat, I'm in a basement. When I heard a sound like a very loud freight train right above me I figured maybe crawling under the kitchen table wouldn't hurt. When it was over I went outside to discover my huge basswood tree blew down about 30 ft. from the house. The staight line winds were near 100 mph and had a swath miles wide.

I now live at Como Park and was in the middle of the Mother's Day storm May 9, 2004. Across the street form my house, dozens of trees blew down. I was looking out an upstars window at the time because based on the TV coverage I had 10 minutes before it would hit. My wife was screaming what should we do but it was over already. The wind speed was about 80 mph. Some were oaks over a hundred years old. After about a week of clean up I took this panoramic shot of the remaining stumps
.
Ha! I laughed when I read your story about the Mother's Day storm, Art, because I remember that one, too.
My husband and I got our then 10-month-old to sleep, and then sacked out on the couch for a nap ourselves. An ENORMOUS tree came down in our yard, just feet from the house. And not only did we not get up to look ("I'm sure it's just Phoebe throwing her bottle out of her crib, sweetheart..."), but I actually looked out the window an hour or so later and didn't notice!

Some of the things that have happened because of Katrina have definitely opened the eyes of the Americans; however, I believe that the relief efforts towards this storm could have been more efficient. God bless :]

My aunt and uncle were kayaking down the Mississippi River from St. Paul, and were in Baton Rouge when Hurricaine Katrina hit. A barge that was going upriver backed up and told them to get off the river and head north, away from New Orleans. Katrina did a lot of damage.
i was in florida when hurricane wilma hit and there werent hard winds but they were pretty hard and that ws smaller than katrina so i can just try to think about what it would be like
SAD STORY,BUT INTRESTING
i think they should invent a michine to stop hurricanes and tornatos

my brother was in missisippi serving in the navy when he had to evacuate and come back.
i hated the huricane. i was so sad
hi, was anyone here in the hurricane?
The world will always have hurricanes; it's a part of nature. It can be sad, but some hurricanes where made worse by humans. Sad, huh?
Most people that hear about hurricane katrina only say that it was sad. They never do anything about it. Those people have lost their homes their family and their jobs. The only thing we lost is that bunny rabbit we had since we were two that lives under our bed.We teens should be doing something to try to make the teens living thier freel cared about. We are the ones who know what is like to feel alone. We should try to make others feel liked and loved.
this was a very tragic day in the usa however, the people who created the damn dam realized that neworleans was sitting in an empty pool and there should have been a water pumping system for this type of emergency.
THAT WAS A VERY VERY BAD DISASTER.
I CANT BELIVE WHAT I SAW , I'M HORRIFIED!
i hope all those people r o.k.... it must of been really scary 2 be in the hurricane...
VERY SAD!
iT WAS A INTERESTING YET SAD INFORMATION
I was just down in new orleans on a missions trip with my chruch and you can still see the damage from katrina. some houses are still left from after the hurricane and need to be gutted. we went to the ninth ward and there are barely any houses. it was so sad to see that where people once lived there is nothing. new orleans still needs help to fix the problems left by the hurricane but i want to thank the people that have helped. GOD BLESS!
it was very sad and I hope it dosnt happen again
