DAY SIX: Tuesday, 9-23-08

Here are today's graphic images of the pig...

Many people have asked me where the pig is. It's on the museum grounds, but in a location inaccessible to visitors this time of year. And it's inside a cage that protects both the pig and the camera. Cage: Scavengers and decomposers can get into the cage, but they can't drag off pieces of the pig.

Today's view with the cage door open Door's open: It looks really different when you're looking at it straight on, instead of from above via the webcam, doesn't it?

Belly Belly: With the webcam, it's hard to see what's happening to the bottom half of the pig's body. When you look straight on from the side, though, the decomposition is obvious.

Face update A pig with no face: The lower half of the face is pretty much gone, and the maggots are pushing on to the neck and the creases where the legs meet the body.

Do you really want a closer view? Face close-up: Amazing.

OK, you asked for it... Maggot mass: This is one of those cases when you're almost grateful that it's hard to take a clear close-up with a digital camera. Except that the blurriness also makes it hard to see what sorts of maggots there are, and how big they are.

Here's today's close-up video, too. This one has audio (unfortunately--thanks, Bryan!), and it's hard to make out. What you hear me say is, "Seriously, I was anticipating a lot worse." (That was in reference to the pig's aroma.) And then I said, "It does seem crazy that I can't see his face!" and "He's got this huge hole right here." (That was in reference to the hole in the pig's neck, obviously.)

I read on deathonline.net/decomposition that,

"Maggots can consume 60 per cent of a corpse in less than a week."

Obviously not quite true in our case, but the insects are definitely making headway.

While we were standing out there, fluids came pouring out of the hole in the pig's neck, and the smell increased suddenly. I wouldn't be surprised if some more major changes occurred overnight tonight.
