Judging from how we treat our planet, we're probably a low form of life compared to what's out there in other galaxies!

There has to be life outside of our universe. There is an incredible number of planets and stars and galaxies beyond our own;a number far beyond human comprehension. Our evolution is imperfect and flawed, yet we have still become the most powerful and intelligent species within millions and millions of miles. Conditions like ours that can support life could very easily arise somewhere else in the universe. THere has been such a wide window of time, and so much space for it to happen, that it is inevitable that there is life somewhere else in the universe. If we can exist, why should we be the only ones?

Yes, it is highly probable that life exists beyond our earth in other galaxies where there are numerous solar systems. Its only a matter of time that we shall be able to discover these civilizations or life forms. The law of probability points to this possibility.

I agree with your take on this issue. I believe that there really isn't life on other planets but, with the way that some movies portray space, it leads a lot of people to belive that there is based on that portrayel.

Maybe there's some kind of unusual creature, bacteria, molecule, or atom. Do you think that Mars (the red planet) could have supported life billions of years ago. While the inner planets and the outer planets were developing.

I say there's a small possibility that Mars could of supported life.

By the way, you had a good theory about odd creatures.

One of the most pervasive, and frustrating popular idioms is that the universe is an awful waist of space if there is not life on other planets (worlds). Are we not "special enough?" We were created in God's image?

After reaching the destination or a short time before, the crew could be revived via. computer aided, and colonize the new world. This journey could also be duplicated to other locations.

This means that there are infinite planets that contain beings of every shape and size and anything in between. The images portrayed in Star Wars and so on are real. Somewhere in the vastness is a system of planets just like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings Series. And not only that, there are an infinite amount of planets just like ours and just like theirs. The population of the universe is not 6 billion beings, there isn't even a number for the amount. And there never will be, regardless of if our planet is somehow destroyed. Good luck in your endeavors!

If you take a 1 inch, you can cut it in half, which would be .5 in and so on. It will continue to break down. Our technology may not allow us to see particles smaller than an atom, but that does not mean they don't exist. This goes to show that it is possible for complete solar systems, flourishing with life can be smaller than an atom that we on earth can barely see. The same goes for largeness, although it is easier for us to beleive in infinite largness than smallness! There is no end to how much something can break down. It's complex, but true.

Zeno of Elea! How nice of you to drop by Science Buzz! We are honored that you would write to us.

A lot has happened since you introduced your famous paradoxes more than 2,400 years ago. First of all, Newton and Liebniz invented calculus, which allows us to put a finite value on infinite series such as the ones you describe.

Then, around 1900, this guy named Max Planck figured out that matter, space, energy, even time, are not infinitely divisible. Rather, there are limits to how small you can get before the laws of physics break down. Now, you can get pretty darn small, but you can’t get infinitely small.

Life, of course, would have to be considerably larger than these limits. Indeed, in order to carry out the basic functions of energy use, reproduction, organization, etc., it must consist of many millions of atoms.

The idea that each atom is actually a miniature solar system is a staple of science fiction, but it cannot work in reality.

You have to realize that the laws of physics were written based on people who might have known a little, but not all. There are many things that have not been discovered. I'm not saying that I know the secret's but I do know that you can't base your belief's on something that cannot be proven. If people want to beleive that we have learned everything about physics, then go ahead. It doesn't dismiss the fact that we know very little. If the people of Earth go by what people said thousands of years ago, without technology, then I fear that our planet is not going to prosper in knowledge of the Universe. Nobody has ever explored out of our reach. The day that happens will be a day of reckoning.

Gene says:

We are no longer talking science here. We have wandered into epistemology--that branch of philosophy which examines knowledge itself and asks, how do we know what we “know”?

You are absolutely correct – science doesn’t know everything. Science can’t know everything. Science is based on experiment and observation. And there is always another observation you can make. There is always another experiment you can perform.

Therefore, science cannot prove anything, at least not in a mathematical sense. What it can do is demonstrate things beyond any reasonable doubt. Short of examining every atom in the Universe, I cannot prove that there are no little people living on the surface of atoms. However, I can demonstrate that it is physically impossible.

The Planck limits were developed in 1900. Since then physicists, using the most advanced, high-tech tools on the planet, have conducted literally thousands of experiments. Every single one of those experiments has turned out exactly as Planck predicted.

Planck’s limits evolved in part out of Maxwell’s equations on electromagnetism. Millions of experiments have been conducted testing Maxwell, and they, too, have turned out as predicted. In fact, every time you turn on your computer, you are verifying Maxwell.

Of course, Maxwell based his work on Newton. And Newton based his work on Keppler and Galileo. And they based their work on Copernicus… well, you see where I’m going. Science doesn’t know everything, but after hundreds of years of experimentation with better and better tools, we do know a lot. We can demonstrate how matter and energy behave. That knowledge, repeatedly verified, leads inescapably to Planck’s limits—also repeatedly verified. If Planck is wrong, then everything we know is also wrong.

Now, it’s always possible that tomorrow, someone will turn the atom smasher up to 11 and get a result that is not consistent with Planck. Does this mean we can throw Planck out the window? Not at all. It just means his work has its limits. So does Newton’s – his classical mechanics works perfectly in most cases. It was only when Einstein applied it to extreme speeds and extreme masses that it needed adjustment. Same with Planck. Some physicists suspect that Planck’s limits might need adjustment under the extreme conditions that existed in the first instant after the Big Bang. But those conditions to not apply to us.

We can demonstrate that matter and energy behave in certain ways. Those ways can only occur if the Planck limits are true. If the Planck limits are not true, then we would see matter and energy behaving in a very different fashion.

You propose that matter is infinitely divisible. That idea was invented “thousands of years ago, without technology.” And while I would dearly love to live in a world where the physical laws of the universe are set by Hannah-Barberra cartoons, we are, unfortunately, stuck in this one.

Humans aren’t always correct. But through careful observation, we can get a pretty solid sense of how things work.

There are two main ways of determining the age of the Universe: temperature and expansion.

Everything in the Universe is moving away from us. We can measure with a fair degree of accuracy just how far away things are, and how fast they are moving. By working backwards, we find that everything in the Universe was at a single point around 13.7 billion years ago – the Big Bang.

The other explanation is temperature. We can measure the current temperature of background radiation in space. We know how hot this radiation is when it is created. And we know the rate at which it cools. Again, working backwards, we get 13.7 billion years.

Any theory that claims the Universe “was never created, it just was” would have to explain these irrefutable observations.

Think. We spend a lot of effort and money seeking water on other planets, because we think that by this we can find life or traces of past life. Why don't we instead pursue science (from Latin for "knowledge") - by observing whatever is on a planet or other body, instead of focusing all our efforts on one substance that might be there? Our science is bent by our desires - we are looking for proof to fit our (scientifically unproveable) theory of the origins of life, instead of observing what is in front of us, whether it fits our notions or not.
As far as life farther out there, the fact is that we will never know what is in other solar systems. Absolutely never! We will not reach other systems. This universe is SO big, and we can't even reach our nearest neighbor solar system. I think the enormity of the universe is exaggeration on God's part to give us some perspective on our size relative to Him. "I'm sure there is life out there somewhere," whether recognized or not, is faith.
Peace. Responses very welcome.

You make a good point -- we have no evidence that there is life anywhere else in the Universe, so claiming that there must be is, indeed, a form of faith.

However, I don't believe scientists are looking only for water. They carefully examine all information coming from other planets, to figure out their composition.

All scientific theories are "unproveable," if you take the mathematical definition of "proof" as "logically shown to be the only possible answer." But science doesn't work that way. It is based on things that are demonstrated as true beyond any reasonable doubt. (The fact that there can always be "unreasonable doubt" prohibits any iron-clad "proof.") We've been studying life for a few thousand years now. We've got a pretty good idea of where it came from, and a pretty good idea of the crucial role water plays in it.

Travel to distant planets is impossible with current technology, but I would hesitate to close the door on future invention. Besides, we don't need to travel to other planets. As telescopes and space probes improve, we can learn a lot about distant worlds without ever leaving our own.

Since water is H20, there had to have been oxygen--my point being if there was water and oxygen there was life! It is stupid and selfish to say we are the only life forms in a universe that goes on and on and on. But if we ever think we are to discover these other life forms, we better start treating our world A WHOLE LOT BETTER!!! Where else is there to go?Treating our environment better should be our community's top priority.......too bad people are trying to put it off until its to late.

In fact, the smallest living cell contains millions of atoms. And, while Clay and I did not discuss it, the laws of physics also preclude creatures so large we would be like an atom next to them. They would collapse under their own weight.

This has been mentioned alot, but I also think the odds are far too great for there to be absolutely no other life out there. Even some microbes or plants, something. So many planets, systems, stars... I think it would be arrogant of us to think "we're all that there is". We cant even SEE other planets yet to make that assumption. The only hint we have of other planets even existing is a slight blip on a stars' light specrum showing when the 'planet' passes in front...and that's with our most advanced (as far as I know) technology. And as for no life in our own solar system, that's not 100% confirmed yet either. Even if it turns out Earth is unique in our own system..to say that means there can't be any other life period would be making that judgement based on 9 planets (8 if you kick out poor pluto) out of how many billion?

I also agree we need to broaden our view of "what could support life". We're broadening that now with finding creatures that live at the bottom of our own oceans in boiling thermal vent water, thriving with no sunlight and chemicals all around them. Fact of the matter is, we're stuck on our little tiny planet here, theorizing and speculating what could be out there, unable even to visit beyond our own moon yet...a little premature for us to say there can't be any other life out there.

I truly believe there is life elsewhere in the universe and in there is a good chance it could be human life. If we as humans are supposed to be God's greatest mortal creation, it would only make sense that this creation would be spread through out the universe. With our Sun being a medium sized yellow star being the source of energy God provided to enable life on this planet...there are countless stars out there virtually identical to our Sun. With that being said, it is very possible there are life bearing planets with similar orbiting cycles. If there are, then it is not so impossible to believe there well could be humans inhabiting these planets. This all goes back to the Intelligent design theory that ties creation science togeather.

Evolutionist would point to similarity in bone alignment with human beings and others in the animal kingdom has having evolved from a common ancestor. Intelligent Design says the designer i.e. God used a common mold of bone alignment, internal systems, etc and that's why structurally we as living things have those likenesses. So if the design for our solar system has been used in medium yellow star, what is so hard about believing that as the omnieverything creator God is, why he couldn't replicate the process using a virtually identical star(s)? Christ did say "I must go to my other sheep", that could very easily mean the non jews of earth as well as those who were not of "this world".

One other thing to consider, there have been countless UFO(roswell,Area 51) sightings over the years, some obvious hoaxes, some unexplainable. I don't want to sound insane but just go with me on this one as this after all just hypothetical but it is possible some of these humans from other planets might be living among us. Get fake SSN's, ID's, the whole 9 yards...it's not impossible if you know who to go to, and if they've established networks to do so. If one of these extraterrestrials were to come out, they would be institutionalized because of the tremendous disbelief of something sounding so far fetched. Rememeber their have certain discoveries in archeology and other sciences that have been dismissed as "anamolies" because the they don't fit the accepted mold. Dinosaur and Human foot prints fossilized togeather, dead plesiosaur carcases found in fishing nets, underwater temples and pyramids of civilizations lost just to name a few that mainstream science dismisses because they don't fit the accept theories and timelines.

Maybe one day we'll know but until that comes if it comes we can only hypothosize and speculate as to what may or may not be. What is impossible to us today may very readily become the breakthroughs and common use items of tommorow...30 years ago record players were the common means of listening to music, then came CD players and now we have MP3 players and ipods. What tommorrow brings will be interesting and that could include interuniversal communication...only time will tell one way or another.

why not? i love science fiction, and the idea of not being alone in the universe is a very appealing one for me. maybe the aliens are silicon based or something, yellow-blooded, and live in different environments than one would expect.

if you think about it, we humans are like nothing compared to God. as the song goes "all we are is dust in the wind." i tend to think of people as mice in God's great laboratory: humanity is one of various experiments in mortal life-forms. He probably created other, different life-forms on different planets in some attempt to improve upon his creations. I view God as powerful but less than perfect, so as a result his creations would be less than perfect. perhaps there are millions of other intelligent civilizations out there, some that started before us (early, less successful experiments) and some that came to be after humanity (more perfect, righteous experiments, the kind God is looking for)

Interesting how closely extraterrestrials are tied to intelligent design! what i've written, of course, is just my opinion, what i've made of my experiences on Earth. i'm far from perfect, so my speculations may be entirely wrong. Nonetheless, I remain hopeful that there is somebody else out there. Hopefully, someday, they will find us.

Within our gallaxie we are only able to reach the moon. Maybe there is more to life even within our own gallaxie. Earth is just a small grain of sand on the biggest beach ever. Remember that each star is a sun waiting to warm the nearby planets. We see stars everyday. Even if we don't, we know they're there. Maybe, just maybe, there is life out there with people wondering the same exact thing we do..."Is there life beyond this planet?" Maybe they just see our sun as another star in the sky like we see theirs. Religon nor Science has anything to do with it... it will always be a matter of "WHAT IFS" forever.

Now, seemingly, if your theory is that life is as simple as, is there "something" that reproduces itself in some form? the answer is definitely "yes". If you consider the popular scientific evidence on how a star is "born", then, life exists beyond the planet and our solar system.

If, however, your definition of life includes the accepted life cycle of birth, growth, reproduction and death", then, that moves the search to the search for extraterrestial intelligence and "little green men".

If they are more intellegent than us they will probably wait for a time when we have evolved or become responsible enough with our technologies to reveal themselves. We are volatile and destructive, seeking intellegent life will not work until we are developed enough to recieve it and not attack it. It will rather reveal itself to us when we are ready.

I think it will happen in 2020
And I reckon the last time they had a big congregation here was WAY BC WAS HERE
Our time for pick up is soon.
It will be like rapture but a bit different
Instead of the non sinners getting takin
It will be who is worthy to fight or just a certain percentage of the entire population.
I hope it's like skyline the movie and our brains are harvested haha.
Or in the way of like star wars where ya have to fight for ya freedom in the galaxy.
Either way there is life out the and it starts just out side of our atmosphere
There is vid proof.
Has anyone seen the NASA got tage where there are green and red light zipping through the hull of the ship and around the astronauts when they make an action like just opening a door or latch.
The beings where traveling at super super super super high speed.
And where that highly evolved they did not need a body form to survive.
Talk about the ultimate level of evolution
Dosnt need a host to be what it is it a higher being fully a higher conscious

Scientist have not detected yet any radio signals so far that does not means Intelligent life not exists in the universe. Even though we are not able to detect any radio or any other technical signals from them, it does not means that there is no intelligent life in the universe. If we go hundred to two hundred back on earth also, there was no radio or like signals on our planet. Does it means that there was no intelligent life on earth two hundred years back? No, actually our technology was not so developed as it is today. This may be the case about the life on other planet. They are still not aware of latest technology and using the same old methods as we were using hundred to two hundred years before.
