tbh i think some game's are addicing such as World of Warcraft. you start at level 1 the hightest level is now 80 use to be 70. you do quests like go talk to this guy go save this person etc... its like u do one quest u get givein more after. also people want to be level 30 because you get a mount like a car but u run around on a big cat. as u get this mount its like 60% speed (really slow) so u want to level to 60 to get a betta one that is faster (100%) then people need gear like epic's that u have to put time into gettin them like raiding black temple for 5 hours or 10 its nuts then u may not even get the loot so thats 5 hours off your life gone for nothin sucks tbh...

Video games are only addictive if you allow them to be. Let your kid play all day they will. I find out the more you restrict them from learning from their mistakes the more they will want to do something you don't want them doing. My daughters x box is out all the time. Therefore she is not really addicted to it because she is sick of seeing it out in the open therefore she does not play it everyday. If your so concerned about violent video games then don't buy them. I only buy used kids games, and my kids don't get money to buy their own things. They are children, and not adults. The problem is not videogames but your rules at home. Anything can become an addiction if you allow it to happen.

Less Than 1 says:

I think that it depends on how the person is. If the person has an addictive personality then that person will be addicted to the video game.

People who do not have their priorities straight will more than likely be addicted to the games. The game should not b controlled with the time because the child or person will just feel they need it more. If they have no limit they will eventually get bored with what they are doing and move onto something different.

so yeah i saw that someone was slashing on the parents for this one?

that is not true. The parents only can limit the time they don't get to limit how addicted a child will become to this game.

jeeze people... use some common SENSE.

Growing up I was not allowed to have a video game until I was 11 for this very reason. My sister just got a new game and yes she is totally addictied I don't really care much for video games but the Wii does get you up and moving wich is a plus unlike other gaming systems.

I would like to prove a fact here, and I will. Heres the fact. Some peoples brains are stimulated by different things in ways that allow them to seriously enjoy the activity that they are doing at the time. Whatever it may be. It could be writing, reading, poetry, drawing, using a computer, talking on your cell phone or text messaging, exercising, playing a sport and last but not least video games. All of these activities are simulating to the brain in some form of way. But as a true video gamer. I can tell you that if you are one with an imagination and have learned how to play a video game console you will be addicted. I mean addicted as in not only will you find yourself playing more games. You won't be able to get enough video games thus playing them longer and for longer periods of time. The reason for this is because our brains become so stimulated by the visuals of the game and the intensity that it brings that it further draws us more and more into the game. Advanced video games (as I will call them) are not for beginners, and a beginner is someone who doesn't understand the controls of the remote they are using to manipulate the character that you are playing in the game or whatever it may be. But someone who constantly plays video games not only is addicted, but their brain craves the creativity the game gives them. Thus FURTHER more drawing that person even more into the game NOT ONLY causing them to crave this desired effect the game gives, but they simply cannot remove themselves from the game because the game is so stimulating that its more powerful than an exercise you could do, a book you could read, talking on your cell phone or whatever else you may or might do with your time. For those minds that live in a fantasy world, and this means outside of a video game where they enjoy taking on the role of a different character and absolutely LOVE being able to manipulate that character in the game using these new found skills they've honed. Its simply and I quote unquote this *the most intense and immensely simulating activity a brain can endure*.

Now I'm sure someone reading this is going to disagree with me, and I can only imagine that a few video gamers who really like video games, but don't play that often will also disagree. But the fact is anyone who's taken heart and indulged into a video game knows and understands how stimulating it is. Anyone else who says they are boring simply cannot relate to the character or fascination of the game itself and thus they are not *into* or able to get into the game. Video games are like reading a book. Like a book you can seriously get drawn into the book and once its time to put down that book you may find it hard because you want to know whats going to happen next. You want to visualize the excitement it may bring or the mystery or whatever it may be! I love books to so i'm not hating on book readers because they are very stimulating to my imagination as well.

But I must say this. Video games are amazingly addictive especially to someone that gets bored easily. Because video games simply eliminate that boredom with a stimuli from doing objectives in the game that allow you to progress which simply draw the person playing the game further more. That is all I am really want to say. Feel free to email me on this subject. I'm addicting to computers and video games for over 10 years. I know the feeling, and I know what kind of psychological effect they can bring just from spending countless hours away from society, friends, family, and in general doing other activities as well. Its hard. Real hard to pull away from an addicting game to do something else. Not even willpower and sheer obedience.

games are fun. maybe to much fun

Yes, I think you can. The reason i say this is because you can get addicted to just about anything. For example people can be addicted to phones, computers, shoes, and etc. So I think you can get addicted to games.

i luv DDR! says:

A few years ago I would have said that video games are for lazy, unintellectual people. This summer, though, my sisters got a couple of video games (DDR and Guitar Hero) and I found out just how wrong I was! Video games are awesome and have helped me to gain hand-eye and foot-eye coordination (before i was really clumsy and uncoordinated). They didn't dent my straight A's or make me any lazier, like I had expected them to. I don't know about addiction...I mean, I personally can go a few days without playing, but I guess anybody can get addicted to anything. But is there a difference between addicts and fanatics? are these people addicted or just enthusiastic?

Well, either way, video games are certainly NOT bad. They do not ruin your brain or make you stupid.

I personally don't feel the need to play a game obsessively even if I'm really into it. I like playing it but i dont miss it when I'm at work or out doing something else. I enjoy it like a good book..if the game has a good story, I want to see its outcome. Games that have little or no story, or don't need at least some thought/problem solving to play, dont tend to hold my interest long at all.
However I *have* heard the stories of people sitting glued to their game for days on end, missing work or school to do so..so obviously some people get 'addicted'.
So I guess in answer to this forums' question, yes i feel people can get addicted to video gaming, but I dont think its the video game itself that causes the addiction. If someone plays them obsessively to the point it hurts their day to day life, then they probably have an addictive personaltiy. In that case if it wasn't video games, it would probably be something else eating up all their time. Does the fact that people can get obsessed with them to that point put video games into the realm of addictive substances and allow it to be classed medically as an 'addiction' with video game help groups and meetings? Or should the focus more be on people with addictive tendencies in general. I see alot of grey area there.

Joe says:

I play a lot of video games. Love 'em. LOVE THEM. I get "addicted" to a game, but only until I have cleared it. Then I lose all interest. And playing is not what is addictive, it is the goal to clear the game, save the princess, destroy the last boss, whatever. But if I don't have a fun game, I am not interested - I don't play just to play. That said, I have managed to avoid all on line games as I fear that they will be the death of me - I watched someone play City of Heroes once and I had to restrain myself for weeks to not join in and play because I could easily see it consuming my life. And since it seems like there is no way to "clear" the game I would play it endlessly.

Yeah, I'm kind of addicted to video games. I have a friend who is kind of addicted to heroin, and we get together and talk about, like, how I can't stop playing Bubble-Bobble on the NES, and how he can't stop injecting illegal drugs into the veins on his feet.

Sharing our common experiences can be very helpful, I think.

Video games are junk food for the brain. An additional fact - one expends more calories staring at a blank wall as compared to staring at a TV show

posted on Fri, 07/13/2007 - 2:54pm
Donny says:

Which is why I've been saying for years that people should spend more time staring at blank walls. Sure, it's not very fun, nor does it usually require a lot of problem solving skills, but think of the exercise value!! I'm glad that fact was brought up. It's very important that we consider the facts.

Also, this is kind of ironic, but I've always considered junk food to be video games for the stomach! And what's the harm in giving your stomach some videogames now and again? I think it's a very good analogy.

Isn't it weird how people can think so alike, and yet so differently, all at the same time.
