It changed how I think about death-- death is no longer something that I view as morbid or scary or something that happens to you... I now view it as a much more natural and graceful process. Additionally, it made me value my body so much more than I did before.

Actually we try to make an interesting experience for all. Not just those who are super interested and want to read all the panels. Its a challenging task but we do try to be interesting for people already engaged in science as well as those who might not find it exciting yet.

From a physical therapist perspective, this is an amazing exhibit that really allows an individual to view the body in a unique way to faclitate more challenged learning and aspects of the body that you can not imagine while working on a supine cadaver while in school. it ties in the components of tendons, ligaments, and muscles to really show the big picture and see how potential positions and stressors on the body can really affect function and life. i think all health professionals should witness this exhibit and further educate others. thanks

you NEVER could have seen anything like this in HS---you missed the whole point of the exhibit (interact? like DANCE with them, or what???) Do you have any idea what knid of meticulous dissection it takes to get the bodies to look like that???And the technology involved to preserve them in such a colorful (real lie color, not brown, which is what formalin does) state. You wasted your time by going.

Too see the anatomical complexities of the human body in this forum is a greater teaching tool than any other method. Too bad that more cities can't have a permanent rather than traveling exhibit.

I found this exhibit to be very educational. However, I would consider that because there is no age restriction, to create a different display for young children. Your choice of positions of the models were scientific, in an artistic way and I enjoyed looking at it educationaly Your choice of openness, however became graphic at the point of the prenatal infants. I would suggest if not a seperate display, atleast a warning label for the young and the squeamish. Otherwise, I thourgally enjoyed your exhibit and will look forward to returning. Thank you for the experiance.

How could anyone think this was boring? Honestly, this was the most amazing thing I've ever seen! The multitude of poses and the description of the specimans keeps the interest if you're willing to read and look closely. It revealed how fragile yet resilient the body can be (show by the hip/knee replacements). Additionally, the fact that there were that many donors who had dark lungs and seemed to be exposed to smoke is a sad fact in our lives. The fetal and utero specimans were so eye-opening--it made me feel thankful that I have two healthy nephews. The fragility and amazement of pregnancy is taken for granted.

my overall opinion on body worlds was that it was something new to observe. It allowed for you to not only just listen and see what it looked like but it also went into depth expanding your knowledge on the body that you function everyday! I really thought that the baby exhibit part seeing the difromities and everything really made you think WOW I was that small once and made me think how cool that actually was. Also when you saw the embryo made me think that i was actually that small once and compared to how much of a difference that is really makes you think how cool that is! Eyes are very difficult to plastinate, and so are often replaced with replicas. I went through the exhibit, and I found that of the 24 plastinates that have eyes (several either do not have eyes or their eyes are closed) two were plastinated (which makes the color of the eye indistinguishable). Of the remaining 22 with replica eyes four had brown eyes, and one had green eyes. I don't know why that is, but I'll contact the Institute for Plastination to see if they have a reason.

According to Body Worlds staff, the eyes are primarily blue because the bodies in the exhibition come from from the Institute for Plastination’s body donation program, which is based in Germany, where donors are mainly northern European, genetically their eyes tend to be blue.

I wish to know how this is any different then prostitution. In both situations people are selling a gift of god for worldly gain. And in both situations another gains the use of your body. That is why I dissagre with this exibit.

Joe says:

I think the main reason that they are very different is the intent of use of the body. Neither the person who donated their body nor their families see any financial gain from their donation - their donations are an extremely generous gift, freely given. The bodies are then displayed for the purposes of education. Their donations provide visitors to the exhibition with an unique opportunity to see and learn about their own physiology, health issues, and to gain new appreciation and respect for what it means to be human in a manner that was not previously possible. The intent of the exhibition is to educate and inspire.

i highly disagree with the supposition that this exhibit is in any way comprable to prostitution. there is no "worldly gain"- there is an advancement of knowledge and a contribution for greater understanding about a very immediate medium. it is incredibly disappointing that you couldn't seperate exploration and the search for knowledge from a personal philosophy.

Here Are My Four Questions...

1. Outside of the touring Body Worlds traveling exhibits, how else are the platinates used? Do medical schools, universities, or other educational/research facilities acquire any of the plastinates?

2. Some of the newer plastinates (ring gymnist and female gymnist) have hair or eyelashes (figure skater). Is this their actual hair?

3. Phoenix with Birds was the only one that seemed to have a literary title. But since the mythological Phoenix actual was a bird, not a human holding two birds, was Von Hagens simply being imaginative with the scene/title, or is this plastinate recreating a specific literary point of reference?

4. Were all of the gray-lung plastinates definitely smokers, or can second-hand smoke or air pollution darken the lungs in the same way?

<em>Thor</em>'s picture
Thor says:

Answers from a Body Worlds gallery supervisor:

1. The process of plastination was developed to prepare bodies for teaching anatomy lessons to future doctors. It was after the successes with that that Body Worlds developed touring exhibitions to visit museum. The plastination process has been around for about 20 years while the museum tours have been happening for about 10 years.

2. The hair on the female gymnast is not real. The hair on the rest of the plastinates is real.

3. You'll have to ask Gunther von Hagens about what his title intentions were.

4. Outside of the two sets of lungs that are definitely labled as coming from smokers, we don't know the respiratory history of the rest of the donors. They could be smokers, ex-smokers or people who live in cities with high amounts of air pollution. Almost everyone has some degree to gray-black in their lungs from air pollution or second-hand smoke.

Plastinated bodies or body parts -- if the process is done correctly -- should last forever. They have no organic materials left in them that will decompose. To the best of my knowledge, no plastinates have had to be disposed of yet from Body Worlds.

I was disapointed with this display, mainly because of the amount of people let into the area at one time. You had to fight your way up to see anything. We missed about half of everything because we couldn't see or get through the crowd. I was also really surprised to see how many young kids under 10 that were there. They didn't have a clue what they were looking at and the comments that some of the kids made were rude and insulting. I know the demand for this display hads been overwelming, but it wasn't worth our time, beccause of all the people. We went on Friday 7/7 and got let in at 1:30 pm. We went during the week to avoid the crowds, I wonder what the weekend crowds are like?
What parts we did get to see and read about were great and educational. Even my 14 and 15 year learned some things. But got frustrated at the crowds and ended up just wanting to get out. The movie in the imax was great! Very educational.

I will come back before Labor day to use them. I have recommended this exhibit to many people. Although people find it disturbing, it makes you think and understand what we are made of and an appreciation for your body. I think it is great.

The exhibit is very interesting and I would definitely recommend it. Two things stood out for me. One is why would anyone smoke after seeing what it does to your lungs? The second was just amazement at how complex we are - and that this complexity exists from the tiniest fetus all the way through death. I also couldn't help from studying the faces of the plastinates and wondering - who was this person? how did they die? what did they do? I didn't find it creepy or gross, as described by others, but it was on my mind. As such, I liked studying the organs more than studying the full body plastinates. However, the poses were beautifully done - they showed how marvelous and beautiful we all are.

Hmmm. While I agree that it could be very interesting to see various kinds of injury, I don't see how it could be done in an ethical way.

I suppose that, if you were a body donor, and were involved in some sort of accident that caused, say, broken bones, and you died of your injuries, then maybe your body could be "frozen in time" so we could see it.

We don't know anything about how the donors in the exhibit died, of course, but I'm assuming that most of them died in less traumatic ways.

Since the bodies are real, if injuries didn't kill the donor, it would be impossible to show unhealed broken bones, etc.

An incredible sacrifice by the donor and the families for the education of others. How much more we are aware of our bodies and how unique our systems work. Thank you for educating my children and myself in a very fun and interesting way.

What are we talking about? Body world?
Well, I throught it was pretty cool. The brain slices were kinda odd though. Did they use one of those egg slicers? I don't think I'd like my brain to be sliced with an egg slicer..

I thought it was really cool. I learned quite a bit. The coolest part was the vein structure.

Finally I think alot of people would have had more fun if they would have gotten the headphones. They provide you with some cool new info, they don't just add an extra paragraph.

I think you should know that the prices were chosen by BODY WORLDS, not the science museum. Its not their fault its ridiculusly over priced.

I thought it was pretty interesting, but i would of liked to see more female bodies than males. Seeing as I am woman i would of liked to see more of my body and their functions. I found it very repetitive but overall it was very interesting.

I was utterly enthralled with the exhibit, and only sorry that we came on a weekday evening and tired after 2 hrs of viewing . . . I think I would advise people to go in a morning or afternoon if they can manage it, and make use of the benches and whatnot as needed.

Something I observed while touring the exhibit--there were many people relating to the exhibit in terms of their own or loved one's medical issues. 'Oh, that's the gall bladder; I had mine out,' and other connections. I had an interest in a few specific things myself--the rotator cuff (for which I will need surgery) and the diaphragm (to help my chorus understand their breathing apparatus better). What would have been helpful would be some kind of resource center--a few terminals, perhaps--in which a person could do a search of the exhibit for areas of specific interest (body parts, diseases, injuries, etc.), and find the exhibit numbers at which these issues or items could be observed, located, learned about.

Gall bladder: View inside the body: 205, 347, 740. View outside the body: 646. Gall stones: 647.

Something like that.

I found that while many of the exhibits (both full body and the items in the cases) were helpfully labeled, others were not. My hope would be that at the very least, portions and areas of the part or form that are discussed in the informative panels would be labeled.

Otherwise, I thought it was fantastic. What a fascinating exhibit!

For the people that thought the exhibit was stupid or any other negative word must not have read the signs, listened to the recording or must have been forced to see it and didn't want to be there. I was very tastfully done, and this was my second time through this exhibit. It's very interesting how we are put together, God did a awesome job. I am glad that they have extended the exhibit until Dec. Thanks for bringing it to MN. I may go see it again late this fall.

I loved this exhibit. I found it fascinating. Especially seeing the man who was dissected into 4 vertical sections. One could see how 'everything fit together'. I am a nurse in the Neurology field and found the brain slices with the hemorrhages very insightful. It gives one an idea of how devastating a stroke can be. I found the fetuses heartbreaking but the staff person informed me that they were over 80 years old and had previously been specimens stored in jars of formalin in medical schools. Overall this was an educational exhibit and anyone interested in health, science, even sports might find it of interest.

This is an odd question, but after going through the exhibit, I'm curious if the plastinatization (is that the right term?), resulted in extra endowment of the male genitalia? It seems all of the bodies were very well endowed. I work in the health field and actually have seen people at the time of their deaths, and honestly, the genitalia usually isn't so pronounced. Overall, I thought the exhibits were well done and very educational. My wife and I went today, (9/8/06). We saw the Human Body movie first, and then saw the exhibits. We picked a great day to go, since school has started and it's Thursday so large crowds weren't a problem. It's definitely worth the money. (However, I think the audio tour should be included in the price.) It was a great day at the Science Museum. We spent over 4 hours in the exhibit.

Thank you for your question. We are glad you enjoyed the BODY WORLDS exhibit, and your overall time at the Science Museum of MN. No, there has not been any extra endowment to the male genitalia.
With the skin removed, there is nothing to restrict the reation to gravity!
Thank you,

I went to to Body Worlds the second week it opened. I thought it was very interesting. I am currently taking an anatomy course at college and I am going back to Body Worlds and I cannot wait to see the exhibit again. I thought it was very educational. It is amazing to see how the body works in so many different perspectives. I understand that some people disagree with this exhibit and think it is wrong do to this to human beings. Everyone has their own opinions about it. I thought it was great and I was very impressed. Good Job!!! Anonymous

Really cool! Although some of the corpses with skin still on their faces disturbed me. I think it's creepy seeing dead people's faces, that's why I hate going to funerals.
I'm taking a High School anatomy class and this was really helpful, instead of cheaply drawn text book pictures, here you could actually see the real thing, but personally, I'd rather donate my organs to hospitals to help people that need them.
