Meat meat meat. Discuss.

Whether you like your steaks or stick to the veggies, meat consumption is a big issue. Does knowing more affect how you think about it? What's the best way to learn and make decisions about issues like these?

What politically correct nonsense

Of course we eat meat, we're omnivores

Of course we don't need to feed a growing population. Many will die, just like any other organism that overproduces.

Stop using the science museum to push political correctness. Teach us science, evolution, darwinism and the basics and leave the politics to the militant vegans.

Who are made of meat. And can be eaten. You just need to cook them low and slow to break down the collagen.

Although the idea of raising awareness towards the process in which the meat reaches our tables is important, it feels like most people treat the information as a hoax and a joke. Folks like to stay ignorant and unfeeling and unmoving on the subjects that are very real and near to the people of planet Earth.

If we stopped raising "meat" and replaced these fieilds with growing grains, i believe you are naieve into thinking that more people around the world would be fed using grain products. i believe the right word is "could" be fed - politics......

The likelihood of the world population giving up meat entirely is... well, it's just unrealistic. BUT... I wonder what would happen if meat eaters (like myself) committed to ONE vegetarian day a week. What would that do for land availability? For environmental impact?

As much as this survey "gave me something to think about" i think there is a healthy balance in eating meat. for me personally i try to stay away from red meat as it takes lots more grain to mature the animal, where as chicken etc. takes far less.

That was a odd survey... I'm a whole-foods vegetarian, used to eat meat, and agree that we are using what would feed the planet of humans to feed the animals that feed only a fraction of the humans! It certainly seems mixed up... It would be much more cost effective to grow foods for humans than to grow foods for animals.

I think that your options for response were difficult to navigate when the second option seemed sardonically ironic. It was hard to decide if the answers were real and genuine as opposed to snarky and unreal. I think it would be best if you were more clear with the answers.

Everything in limited quantities is ok, As far as meat and the grains we produce for the animals is all renewable energy and resources. Think about this, all the crops that we grow for animals also produces okygen, don't you think that the okygen produced erases the carbon from the atmosphere? Plants have to live too you know.

Interesting survey, but I would like topoint out one thing. Much of the land that is used for grazing animals could not be used to plant crops. So a direct comparison of acres used for grazing vs. crops is misleading.

I love meat but for me it is a treat and not a staple at every meal ... the reason for this is that I love and respect animals and care about the poor practices used in American livestock industry... I also know that meat i higher in saturated fats and toxins than other sources of proteins such as nuts and beans (which I also love) and latly... meat is just plain expensive and time consuming to cook right... but it's a delicious treat for those days I'm carving it and have time :)

I concur with one of the earlier comments that this is a poorly framed questionaire. One of the possible responses to one of the questions, for example, say conflates being an unapologietic meat eater with believing that global warming is fake--but those are two different matrices. Makes me think the point of this survey is just to show off how clever you can be.

JGordon says:

I'd say that showing off how clever I can be is typically a secondary objective in the things I do. Sure, I might throw a "matrices" into a sentence here or there, but my main goals are to trick people and pass judgement.

You aren't registered, so I suppose you might not come back to see this response, but I'll let the cat out of the bag anyhow. The questionnaire is indeed oddly framed at points, I'll give you that. Partly that's because I'm not a skilled evaluator, but it's also partly because the point of the survey isn't so much to gauge who eats meat and who doesn't, or even their reasons for doing so; the survey is to see how people feel about discussing the subject. It's a trickier thing than I had initially assumed—there's a lot tied up in a person's decision to eat meat or not, and I was interested in what sort of things make people respond aggressively or defensively, or just with open minded interest. That third option is what we hope to get at with other museum components that discuss the implications of an increasingly meat-heavy global diet, but getting there involves a lot of folks assuming the questioner is fat, or weak, or anti-meat, or disdainful of vegetarianism, or a sassy little cleverboots.

The options given are often caricatures of the extreme positions one might take in this discussion, and I hope people don't take them too seriously. But, you know, you can do what you will with them.

I think meat tastes great, and some types of meat do have certain nutritional values; there is no denying that fact. But we also cannot ignore the facts about what meat production is doing to our planet. The research doesn't lie! Production of meat is terribly inefficient, but I think that it is unrealistic to ask everyone in the world to stop eating meat because, yes, it does taste pretty good! At the very least though, people need to make sure they acknolwedge the problems that meat causes because those problems are there. Current practices should be reformed to try and make meat production a more efficient and less cruel practice.
