On June 12, 2009, we’ll all be watching a new kind of TV—or we won’t be watching TV at all.

June is when all American TV stations are required to turn off their analog transmitters, completing the transition to digital broadcasting. A digital TV signal is a very different way of sending the information that gets displayed as images and sound on your TV. The technology used to “understand” a digital signal is different, and digital signals can be used do different things than analog signals.
