| Whole pig | Whole pig: Wow. What a difference a day makes, huh? Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| Closer, pan right... | Pig's front half: The pig has really dried out quite a bit. Most of the maggots up in this area are busy going in and out of that hole in the center of the photo. Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| Closer, pan left... | Pig's back half: The flies/maggots are turning their attention to this half of the pig now. Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| Head shot | Head shot: You know, I'm not sure we can call this a "head shot" when the pig has no head... Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| Belly, close-up | Got you under my skin?: Now it's hard not to notice all the maggots moving around under the tissue-thin surface skin. These guys are in the area of the pig's belly button. Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| A little "pop" | Belly button explosion: While we were out there taking photos, the hernia "popped." Thank goodness it wasn't the whole belly! Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| An even closer look | Hernia: 'Nuff said. Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| Fly clusters | Flies: Flies have been hanging out in these two little clusters all day. I'm not sure what they're up to. Is there a juicy spot there? Are they laying eggs? Or are they eating the pig directly? Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| Close up of those flies | All the same: Yesterday we were seeing several different kinds of flies. Today, though, we mostly saw these guys. And they're staying put. They don't buzz around. We also saw a wasp swoop in there and grab one of these and fly away with it. Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| The only obviously juicy area today | Maggot soup Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| I'm amazed. | Feats of strength?: I think it's totally amazing that the writhing mass of maggots has moved these jaw bones so far from the pig's body. Oh, and see those lone, traveling maggots? Those are the guys who make the trails that look like "spin art." Courtesy Roger Barrett |
| Jawbones | Jawbones: Look how clean they are! Courtesy Roger Barrett |
It is so amazing how cleanly insects can clean a piece of bone. Absolutely stunning!
u guys are brave i could never even walk in to that room with a dead pid
I know this is very late, but what happened to the head of the pigs bone structure (I guess its "skull"?)? That cant be *it*-- not just the jaw? There must have been other bones....
