That was actually kind of interesting. The swelling of the body and the sudden swarm of maggots that seem to come pretty fast. I wonder how many days that was.
The sight of homeostasis is so hard to watch. I was amazed and horrified as I watched nature take its course. But our planet isn't big enough to prevent death of its inhabitants or to leave everything whole. And all life forms must be nourished. CSI aside, this really makes me think more deeply about the implications of being human.
i had a classmate from high school tell me about dissecting a pig while in a college-level science class. instead of dissecting a frog, which is done in high school science classes. that is what this article reminds me of, about what can be studied.
The intestines of living creatures contain a wealth of bacteria and other microorganisms. After an animal dies, its body can no longer keep these critters in check. The bacteria multiply like crazy, breaking down tissues and cells and releasing fluids into body cavities. In the low- or no-oxygen environment of the pig's body, the bacteria respire, producing gases such as hydrogen sulfide, methane, cadaverine, and putrescine. (These gases are what make dead things smell so awful.) And the build-up of the gases inflates the body. Or, as you say, "blows it up like a balloon."
Though a bit on the disgusting side, it is a beautiful reminder of our mortality, and what our 'end result' will be...worm food. Something to think about when throwing away a plastic container. It will be around many years after any of us.
it is cool but also grows when i saw it i felt like i had bugs on me the black water stuff was weard at ferst it looked the same for like a awer it was weard that it tern blue on the stamech
Really interesting piece of footage, i am studying entomolgy as part of my forensics course and this helped alot with the process of body decomposition even though it was a bit weird to watch.
I have wondered about the terrible ODOR of rotting flesh. I know it's due to molecules of a certain shape that, regardless of actual origin, tell the sense of smell that something DEAD is nearby. Some plants produce such molecules to draw houseflies to pollinate them -and thus are NOT popular with people living nearby.
As to why our brains interpret these molecules as disgusting & foul, I can only speculate that rotting flesh is a health hazard, so we evolved to perceive these particular molecules as disgusting -when they may actually smell like - Chanel #5 !
that was nasty
so many maggots. I think I'm going to have a pulled pork sandwich now...
Bacon and ham sound like the best food to have after that movie
that was cool, fascinating and disgusting

wow that was amazin lol it lasted for a while and then just broke down all at once
that is very disgusting and i could only watch 1 30 of it

THAT WAS SOOOOOOOO cool. was it me or did the insides like liquidfy . so cool so cool. but I'm glad i didn't have to smell it.

very philsophicle makes me want pork.
--- It's interesting to watch the decomposition. I think more people would have been horrified if it was a human so be glad it was a pig!
Forensic entomolgy rules!

Some high school biology classes, particularly AP biology classes, do dissect fetal pigs, among other things.
Why does a dead pig take only 2 1/2 minutes to decay?
It's a time lapse video. We took a picture every 8-15 seconds, and then made the photos into a movie that plays very fast.
If you watch both pig videos, you're looking at three or four weeks' worth of photos.
wow, now lets watch a decaying human so we can compare and contrast! (j/k kind of)
what were the insects in the upper right hand corner of Part2 around 1:10? the ones that were tearing away little strips.
I am totally willing to be studied in this kind of time-lapse when I'm dead
That was simultaneously the coolest and most disgusting thing I have ever seen in my life. Awesome.
......disgusting looks like my brother when he falls asleep when thers still a pizza in his mouth.............................im hungry
That is really odd, your brother with a pizza in his mouth.
What an oddly beautiful series of events. It is so amazing what nature and a little bit of time can do.
I don't think I've erver seen anything like that befor. that was so gross I kinda gagged. Why did it blow up likea balloon?

If you want to know more about decomposition, try the Australian Museum's great resource, Decomposition: What Happens to the Body After Death?
that was soo gross i wont eat pork for weeks
grosssssssssssssssss im sick
cool
this movie really was awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was awsome!!!!!!!! Science at its fullest
a good arguement for cremation
omg
that was so sweet!!! really cool
That looks very yummy! Pass the pork please!
Hungry for pork? Anyone?
What happens when a body is in a plastic bag? If the flies can't get to it, how does it decompose?
.......we were going to have pork chops tonight! But we did csi #1 so pepperoni pizza is out to!!!!
Did someone have to kill the pig or did it commit
suey-cide?
Thats cool
looks like this piggy isnt goin' home
wow that was slightly creepy, and yet educational

That...was....AWESOME!!! :D
It was cool and disgusting all at the same time. At one point in the video the face was just gone! That was really neat.
that was pretty nifty you guys :D
next put sound on it (pretty please?)
*squish*
Actually, the pig was quite silent through the whole process.
My sister couldn't watch the video it was sooooooooooo gross!!!
it blew up and then deflated and lots of liquid came out
BARF!!
it is cool but also grows when i saw it i felt like i had bugs on me the black water stuff was weard at ferst it looked the same for like a awer it was weard that it tern blue on the stamech

This was amazing to watch, disgusting I admit but astounding.
How those little tiny creatures can do that is beyond me.
and how they move those bones is quite fascinating.
Thank you for doing this experiment.
what was the liquid that came out of hte decaying pig???????
what is happening when that blob comes out of his body??????
