Embryo - 5 weeksCourtesy Ed Uthman Lesbian couples could one day have children who share both their genes. Karim Nayernia, Professor of Stem Cell Biology at Newcastle University, has applied for ethical approval from the university to use bone marrow stem cells from women to start experiments to derive female sperm.
“I think, in principle, it will be scientifically possible,” Prof Nayernia told New Scientist.
Other research is setting the stage for a gay man to donate skin cells that could be used to make eggs, which could then be fertilized by his partner’s sperm. A surrogate's uterus would be needed to bring the baby to term.
In Brazil, a team led by Dr Irina Kerkis of the Butantan Institute in Saõ Paulo claims to have made both sperm and eggs from cultures of male mouse embryonic stem cells in the journal Cloning and Stem Cells.
A whole class of hereditary diseases, including some forms of epilepsy, result from faulty DNA related to mitochondria. Starting with 10 severely abnormal embryos left over from traditional fertility treatment, researchers removed the nucleus, containing DNA from the mother and father, from the embryo, and implanted it into a donor egg whose DNA had been largely removed. The only genetic information remaining from the donor egg was the tiny bit that controls production of mitochondria. The embryos then began to develop normally, but were destroyed within six days.
"We believe that from this work, and work we have done on other animals that in principle we could develop this technique and offer treatment in the forseeable future that will give families some hope of avoiding passing these diseases to their children." said Patrick Chinnery, a member of the Newcastle team.

Wow. Why are scientist trying to play god. Why are they trying to create babies. If gay people want to have babies adopt a child at least. Why would you want to experiment with someone elses life. It's not there fault and they did not ask for that type of treatment. What if that child has many things wrong with itself. What if your decision has caused the baby to have many long term illnesses and you knew it was your fault and there was proof to that. Not everything can be bad to this. What if there are some good affects to this. Many people who want babies but can absolutely can't have any maybe this could help. I'm not saying just because your gay that you can't have kids. I'm saying stop playing with peoples bodies especially people who don't have a choice about it. People who can't defend their right as a human being.
Does any baby have any choice over who conceives him or her? Some babies are created by a man and a woman who have no intention and/or ability to care and provide for them. By going through this process, with both its time and expense, show that gay couples have more commitment to raising a "scientifically created" child? I don't know any of the answers to these questions, but they're worth asking as this new medical procedure is being developed.
In response to Candice re: your comment 'Why are scientists trying to play God, why are they trying to create babies'?
If you are against scientists learning new information, are you then saying you don't accept medicine from your doctor when you are ill? When you are ill do you solely rely on 'praying to God' or do you see a doctor (scientist)? Are you also against engineers and architects designing structures to resist the damages created by earthquakes?
Your other concerns are not exactly clear due to your grammar. Please reword your above comment and I will be happy to debate you some more.
i honestly dont thin that is right i mean that is mother nature that you are playin with. an what if something goes wrong an there is a problem with the baby i mean you cant just kill it..... an i also think if some one wants a kid that bad that they should go adopt one because there alot of kids that do need parents but i dont know thats just my point of view.......
I think this is a cool thing. I think that everybody has a chance to have a child no matter what your sexual preference is. If it was you and yu wanted a child with the person you love but people tell you it's impossible you wouldn't like that. I also feel like they have a better chance at sucess in rasing that child because it doesn't happen naturally. It's more planned out.

i think that is so cool.... to be honest i love that both couples can have babys i dont think itd fair if you in love with the same sex you cant have a baby thats a bunch of bs i think the person you in love with and want to spend your live with you should be able to have a family with who ever you are in love with
i agree that scientists should not mess with mother nature..human beings cannot play god..period...and i support both gay and lesbian and have no problem that they want a baby..but they should defitnely try adoption because there are so many other kids out in the wworld who longs for a mother or father...
scientists should think about the consequences of this experiment because things dont always turn out correctly there could be many defaults...
I think is bad because when the baby born and grow up the child be confused because he see the difference between the others children and compare why I have 2 mom's or 2 dad's.
But the beauty is both of those parents will actually be that child's parents so they won't grow up with the same thoughts as say a child raised in a single parent household.
What is with all the "playing God" comments. You are making a huge assumption. Believe whatever makes you happy but don't piss all over other people just because you assume there is a God.
Exactly. Where is your fairytale 'God' when babies are dying in third world countries? Scientists however are trying to solve problems in the real world.
