I went to the "Fall Color Blast" at the Lee & Rose Warner Nature Center this afternoon. I arrived to watch the bird banding just as a large group was leaving. Since we were the only people there, we were able to watch a bird being banded up close. I used my camera to capture it on video.
If you want to view the video in higher quality double click on the video and choose "watch in high quality" (below the video). You can also choose to watch it full screen by clicking on the icon in the lower right.
First, I can only imagine what this bird is thinking. First it is caught and banded, which probably means it is teased by all the other birds, and second it probably is less than impressed by the speaker's ability to flip through a book whilst holding on to a irritated bird. "Oh great, yea, let's open another book. Here's an idea, how about you talk about me AFTER YOU LET ME GO."
Seriously, I went to one of these a couple of years ago and it was really cool. They are amazing with those birds, considering how fragile they are, and I learned a ton. Plus, did the do the thing where they put the bird on its back on your hand and it just sits here instead of flying off for the longest time? So cool. Highly recommend going.
Here is a video of a bird being released after banding.
