Found on the NYTimes Dot Earth blog, this little video uses

" tools from the gaming world to illustrate what a low-end estimate of the volume of oil gushing from the Gulf of Mexico seabed looks like if displayed as stacked barrels."

(25,000 barrels is now the low estimate of how much oil is spilling into the Gulf of Mexico from the ruined Deepwater Horizon wellhead every day.)

I was intrigued, but the lack of scale bugs me. 25,000 barrels obviously makes a big pile, but just how big is big?

A barrel of oil is less than 3 feet tall, so the height of this tower is off. But the number of barrels isn't.

The barrels look like an optical illusion! I didn't know if person's point of view was going up or down!

Um. I don't understand some things. Like, what's that ray-gun thingy that appears sometimes - are they in a video game? and, it can't be that tall, can it? No, I guess it can't, Liza.

It's true that the oil spill is destroying the ecosystem. But they could be a little more accurate in showing us tha damage.

One thing that might sound a bit naive: Why can't they just nail some sort of big metal plate over the hole? I understand that they can't, but why? Is the oil just guchiing out to fast, or what?

PS I feel very sorry for the ecosystem.

I think it is very sad and I do have many questions but Im only a kid so I don't exactly know what questions I should ask or if they would be answerd. But we should do something to help these poor animals I mean they cant do anything in defense so it's our job.
