Baby bears, on the way

by Liza on Jan. 21st, 2010

Lily, a 3-year-old pregnant black bear, made her den near a cabin in Ely, MN. Access to electricity, etc., meant that researchers were able to install a web cam in Lily's winter quarters. And today, their efforts may be rewarded. Biologist Lynn Rogers told the Associated Press that he thinks Lily's labor started today at around 2 pm. We should see cubs in the very near future.

The Associated Press is reporting, as of an hour ago, that Lily's cubs have arrived. I haven't been able to load the web cam though yet to see them for myself. Guess everyone wants a peek!

Sadly it looks like Lily's cub Hope has gone missing and the staff at the bear center are thinking she might be dead. Lily went searching for her, but seems to have given up.

Hope could still be alive, but seeing Lily give up and not return to the spot has us thinking the worst. Did she find Hope dead last night? Was there not enough scent for her to track Hope? Did the ill-timed rain kill Lily’s chances of finding her? In our waking hours overnight, like you, we felt joy that the morning would bring good news. The emotional roller-coaster continues. Although we haven't completely given up hope, mainly want closure.

I wonder what happened to the new cub.
