Birthday of Carolus Linnaeus

by Anonymous on May. 23rd, 2010

Today marks the 303rd birthday of botanist Carl von Linne (also known as Carolus Linnaeus). The Swedish born von Linne (1707-1778) created the familiar system of binomial nomenclature of life on Earth, where each plant or creature is classified a two-part scientific name comprised of both genus and species. The genus is always capitalized, while the species never is, and whenever possible, both names should be in italics, e.g. Homo sapiens or Stegosaurus stenops.
