Lucy in the sky with diamondsCourtesy Travis Metcalfe and Ruth Bazinet, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
Just in time for Valentine's Day, astronomers discovered a star Feb. 13, 2004 that is thought to be a diamond crystal weighing 10 billion trillion trillion carats.

ok, please, seriously, diamond is just carbon crystals. i really hate how the article went on and on about gem this gem that, diamonds last forever = earth in billions of years. Bill gates no being able to afford it, women not being able to wear it...please, a core of diamond does not mean beautifully human-cut and polished diamond sitting in the core! (misleading picture, though it may sell to audience)
First of all, they only believe it is a diamond from their measurements, they have not actually obtained materials from the core of that specific white dwarf. So please do not sell the diamond idea with science. Besides, they may know it is carbon, but how do they know that it is carbon in the diamond crystal form...who is to say. carbon may act differently in space, lightyears away and billions of years old...maybe the carbon may be reacting/bonding/creating material in a way that is not possible on earth due to difference of conditions.
but of course, again, since no one really knows, who is to say that carbon is not acting exactly the same way and becoming diamonds in the core just like the diamonds formed on earth.
either way, this is a very interesting topic to keep an eye on, what might this mean about other stars, white dwarfs, etc. maybe there will be research to actually obtain materials from star cores...yes, i dream big!
I'm gonna get on this planet and stick ma flag in it.
how did a diamond get in the sky?
no way?! a billion trillion trillion carats..? i cant believe that! and by the way, how did a diamond get into the sky?? arnt diamonds sapose to be under ground or in caves or sumthing like that??
All atoms anywhere where created via fusion within a star or sun. When the star goes nova the heavier elements gather together to for planets. The heat and pressure deep within planets can create diamonds though (from carbon).
this is amazing! is this a planet or a star? i dunno
