Don't worry, be science: Putting to bed 10 common scientific worries at summer's end

by Thor on Jul. 29th, 2008

I get some interesting questions from visitors when I out working on the museum floor. A lot of times I don't have the answers, praticularly about new trends of science that are in the headlines. Here's a top 10 list of things you don't have to worry about, from a scientific viewpoint at least, as you enjoy the final days of summer. Topics addressed include shark attacks, cancer from cellphones and the risks of using your car's air conditioning.

Someone sent this to me and I felt like my brain was going to explode (in anger). specifically the plastic bags, he doesn't address all the facts, #2 opening windows is still the more "eco" choice, it doesn't release -fluorocarbons. I'm extremely skeptical about 3. don't planes release significantly higher levels of CO2? #5. I'm disturbed at the concept of plastic bags in the landfill, and Mr. John Tierney did not even mention reusable cloth bags! it's in the EPA article! Plus, plastic doesn't recycle nearly as well as paper. You have to recycle several plastic bags to make one. Also, anyone notice that under the shark attacks he said "one fatal shark attack". fatal being the key word. Sorry about the rant.

Maybe "exploding brains" should be #11 on the list? :)

Most people typically worry about the same things i.e. money, work, relationships, children, bosses, debt, family, health, etc. But, unless you want to drive yourself crazy over people and things you can't control then it's time to put the worrying aside and start to find your faith.
