"Jim Smith, 23, is taking citizen science to another level. He designed and built his own 3D printer, which sits in the corner of his living room. We made a house call, got a tour of the machine and did some printing."

This is pretty sweet. If I had one of these in my living room, I could replace that boingy rod in my apartment's toilet paper holder that my roommate broke last week without leaving my apartment!

I like the point Jim Smith makes regarding the rise of the microwave. Once thought to be a prohibitively expensive luxury item (my grandma once told me she and her sisters took a microwave cooking class back when the machines first came out because none of them knew how to use it!), few American households could function without this piece of technology. Same idea goes for all kinds of household appliances, including washing machines and dishwashers.
