Immunity from AIDS?

by Gene on Jul. 09th, 2008

The HIV virus attacks white blood cells by latching onto a protein on their surface. People without that protein are immune from AIDS. Using that knowledge, scientists in Pennsylvania have figured out how to genetically manipulate mice so they, too, have the immunity.

The procedure has not yet been tested on humans. If it does work, it wouldn’t cure the disease, but it could let infected persons live healthier lives with the virus.

You seem to have misread the article.

The only way to get AIDS is to receive bodily fluids from an infected person.

You cannot get AIDS from food.

Eating certain food will not protect you from AIDS.

The article notes that the AIDS virus works by attaching itself to a certain protein produced naturally by the human body. (NOTE: not a protein you eat.) Some people's bodies do not produce this protein; they seem to be immune to AIDS.

And now I laugh at all the people who said you could not be immune to things like AIDS or Herpes, even theoretically. Chances are you can be immune to damn near anything.. you just got to figure out how. A complicated process, nonetheless.
