Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) snapped this amazing photograph of Sarychev Volcano as it erupted and punched a hole through the clouds. The volcano is located in the Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan. The ISS just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Talk about lucky! Go here to learn more about the geological event, and how the image was captured.

I can't believe that a tsunami killed that many people! How could they have not seen a fifty-foot wave coming? I find that hard to believe. Have there ever been any other tsunamies since or before the one in 2004?

Thor says:

The thing with tsunamis is that the wave action stays below the surface of the ocean until it approaches the shoreline and is force above water. For that reason, people living on the coasts where it struck did not have a lot of time to see it coming.

Also, in many areas where the tsunami struck, the wave action pushed fish up on to the beach ahead of the main wave. Starving people rushed out to collect the free fish without any idea of the devastation coming behind.

yeah but when a bunch of water disappears from the ocean i wouldn't want to go playing in it, that could only mean trouble.
