by Gene on Jun. 10th, 2007

Photos from the Mars rover Opportunity appear to show small puddles of liquid water. Since water is necessary for life as we know it, this raises the possibility that life may exist on Mars. Some scientists, however, believe that liquid water could not last on the Martian surface, and that this is actually ice.

The story has been retracted. Further analysis shows that this can't be liquid water. False alarm.
