Want to do your little part to raise awareness of Earth's energy crisis? Turn out all your lights Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. A rolling global blackout will be taking place to mark Earth Hour 2009, the third year such an observance is being made. Among the celebrity endorses of the power-free hour is the band Coldplay, which I assume will be playing an acoustic set if it's on stage during those hours. More than one billion people are expected to cut their lights for an hour around the world Saturday.

Never one to let a good parade go un-rained on, James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal is organizing a counter protest. If you think that global warming (TM) is over-hyped, demonstrate by leaving your lights on tomorrow night! There could be as many as two billion people joining the counter-protest. Most cities are planning to leave their streetlights on, showing which side they are on. All the major TV and radio stations are participating, by continuing to broadcast all night long. Even the Internet is on our side, as no cuts to service are planned!

(Yes, it's a joke, but I thought it was funny.)
