A levee holding back the Des Moines River broke Friday night in Des Moines, sending water rushing into a neighborhood near downtown.
In Cedar Rapids, the state's second-largest city, the waters of the swollen Cedar River crested Friday night, but more than 400 city blocks remain waterlogged and 24,000 people have been forced from their homes.

well i think when people get a warning they need to take it serious and not take it as a joke all the time your life is in danger thats not something that you play with
This destruction is simply horrific! Juat to think in my own town of Belvidere Illinois that this could easily happen! It is very frightening!

I'm from cedar rapids and the destruction is still vivid to this day. many people have been displaced. my thoughts go out to those who no longer can call cedar rapids home.
