Kalia Her: YSC Science Guru

While many kids play sports or sit on their couches, Kalia Her and Eric Halverson are some of the few to go to the 2005 International Science Fair. Kalia Her is a sophomore at Johnson High School in St. Paul. She is also my co-worker in the Youth Science Center at the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Ever since 6th grade, Kalia has been in science fairs. This year she has reached her goal: she is going to the International Science Fair, which takes place from May 8th to May 14th in Phoenix, Arizona.

Kalia and Eric chose "Water Quality" as this year's topic. In February, they competed in Regions, meaning they must really know their stuff—most science fair entries must go through State before Regions.

While interviewing Kalia about her topic and what her project is about, I have come to understand Kalia's passion and her enthusiasm for science.

When I asked Kalia what has inspired her, she told me:

"My teachers in 5th and 6th [grade] always inspired me, and especially my cousin Kou Nhou, who went to Internationals twice and won 4th place."

We will reveal the amazing conclusion of the science fair next week...

This is so cool. I hope that you will tell us more about their "Water Quality" project when you report back next week.
