The daily feed from NASA's MODIS Aqua satellite has some cool images of the Los Angeles wildfire. It's shocking to see how close it is to the city. You can follow the images as the fire progresses on the MODIS website for the LA area.

They have a webcam at the observatory, but it looks like it's stopped broadcasting. I hope that just means that the power is out, and not that the station is ablaze.
According to that article this is the observatory where:
In the 1920s, Edwin Hubble used the observatory's 100in Hooker Telescope to prove that the Milky Way is one galaxy among many, and that the Universe is expanding.
Last comment from me on this...I swear...but wouldn't it be great if nature could self-correct and the hurricane heading toward Baja move a little bit further north to L.A.. and put out the wildfires?
Looks like an important research station on top of Mount Wilson in the area is also under threat. The Mount Wilson Observatory along with quite a few telecommunication towers are in danger of being gobbled up in the fire.

Beyond the obvious fire danger, it's kind of freaky to look at a picture from space of a fire that's endangering an observatory.

i love volcanoes but i've always wondered how do they erupt
