A felled tree in Central ParkCourtesy zoolienI don’t live in New York, and have only been there a couple of times. But the last time I was there I was able to spend a few minutes in wonderful Central Park, so this article caught my eye.
According to officials at the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Central Park Conservancy (who manage the park), over 100 trees were toppled in what they called the most severe destruction the park has seen in at least 30 years.
Check out these flickr images of the damage. Do you live in New York and/or have you seen the damage? Tell us about it by commenting below!
Sorry didn't make it to central park today bu tI am in brooklyn an the torrential rain and high wind tore through our area around the same time. We are in a relatively wooded neighborhood in flatbush. The recent heavy rains resulted in some tree damage sadly this led us to cut down an old forked white birch that was hanging a little too precarioiusly over our neighbors home. Our areÀ fiske terrace in flatbush has many huge old trees some dating back 100 years. So sad to see historic tree damage central park withstood
Thanks for the post and the update!
In brief, I ran in Central Park today - I ran the loop as I always do.
I was out of town during the storm and heard nothing about it.
The damage was simply draw dropping. Everywhere I looked, trees were significantly damaged if not entirely toppled.
In 12 years of being a New Yorker and Central Park runner, I have never seen anything like it.
Thanks for the update!
Seems like we've been stumbling onto lots of urban weather stories lately.
The recent storms that have been hitting us are much more violent and powerful than the ones that we have been used to before. It has taken a lot of people by surprise and caused a lot of damage to property. Nobody wants to be in that kind of situation.
