Teen perspectives on animal research

On Wednesday the Make It Team from the museum's Youth Science Center talked about research using animals.

MakeIt Team
MakeIt Team

The teens watched four short videos:

  • Diabetes Hormone, a video about Diabetes research using mice
  • Fluoride in the Brain, a video about the effects of fluoride on mice and humans
  • A video about animal research from PETA
  • Hibernation, showing how animal hibernation research impacts space exploration.

After watching the videos, teens used the Democs Game to talk about the pros and cons of animal testing. Democs is a role playing activity where teens are assigned different view points and then asked to debate issues from those view points.

A cloned animal is genetically identical to the animal its DNA came from. But clones are otherwise animals just like any others: they have different personalities than their "parent" animals, and they experience the same range of sensations. If it's not ethical to engage in animal testing, cloning won't get us off the hook.

i completely agree with you, even if they are cloned, they can still feel pain just like any other living creature. not to mention that even the way they slaughter the animalss for meat is sick and twisted, i mean they pretty much torture them first. only people who are totally sick and twisted would experiment on a living thing, i mean seriously, what if the product is deadly, we just try it on animals just because they cant speak for themselves? i have gone vegetarian for that very reason.

For one thing, in that song they arent talking about monkeys that hang from trees if ya know what i mean. And secondly, only about 5% of the animals are monkeys and other primates. 1% are the usages of dogs or cats and that is very rare, and 90% of them are rodents and birds mainly, mice, rats, and pigeons. Then the other 4% are horses, cows pigs, goats, and other farm animals, and also exotic animals and fish, including sharks, whales and dolphins etc. There is alot of things that are tested on animals that arent all bad either. Animals help us with the psycological parts of human beings that we cant understand. And not all are harmful to the animals either. In the United States you can get into some major trouble if you are useing animals inhumaly and are treated like a mat you walk on. A person can spend up to there life in prison down to a measly $100 dollar fine and a warning. So really how do you all really feel about animal testing?

PETA is an extremist organization that exagerates and is hypocritical too...
I LOVE animals, but PETA believes that they should be treated NO DIFFERENT than people... that we are equals.
That is insane, we were put here on this earch in domain over the animals, we should still take care of them as best as we can and try to cause them as least amount of pain as possible, but we should still be able to use them... I mean, I'm sure a lot of you eat meat, right? according to PETA, that is JUST as wrong and immoral as it would be to eat a HUMAN BEING! So of course, since they believe that, they will find as much evidence of animal mistreatment as they can to shock people and make them come to their side. They find the worst case scenarios and make it seem like EVERYTHING is that way and that cruel. In fact, there are many animal research laboratories that treat there animals VERY well!! I talked to a scientist in the Medical device/Pharmaceutical field, and she said that they are heavily regulated when it comes to animal testing. The animals in their clinical trials, are treated even better than the people in their clinical trials. Everything is written out for them: type of bedding, food, water, access to play toys, amount of sleep and light/dark cycles, temperature and humidity of their sleeping quarters. Not to mention, they have veterinary care, and there are people employed who's job is specifically to play with them. If you think about it, why would a laboratory want to treat their animals horribly? That would mess up their experiments if they had stressed animals!! It is true that there were/are labs that treat their animals awful, but they are just the idiots of the bunch. Most labs make an effort to be as humane as possible to not cause unnecessary pain! Labs are also using the three R's, "Reduction, Refinement, Replacement." In order to carry out a test, it must be approved by the USDA, and ethical principles must be followed. Those videos that PETA has on their website are worst case scenarios that took place before eithical animal testing was well enforced! PETA is very misleading. Trust me, I have done A LOT of research. and have written a college research paper on the subject with many, many references. If you still think badly on the subject, why don't you keep in mind that without animal research and testing, many of the animal rights leaders would not even be alive today to protest!! PETA's vice president is life-dependent on insulin, which she admits still contains animal products, and was tested on dogs, and she has NO problem taking it, yet still protests against animal research!! According to her, she needs HER life, so she takes the animal-tested insulin, but when it comes to other people's lives being depended on animal research, she is totally against it!!
Without research on animals, our lives wouldn't be the same.. we'd be constantly ailed by sicknesses and many would die, all which could have been prevented. Not to mention, it also helps veterinary health as well.

i think it is extremely cruel to hurt animals for our "well being" considering most testings rarely ever work.
more then 1 million different animals are being killed every year for this, and normally only 5 - 25 percent of the testings accually work.
plus, the 1 in 6 patients at hospitals are there because of a treatment they've had.
ALSO, aspirin and digitalis (a heart drug) and cancer treatments FAIL the animal testings, but they work on humans.. BECAUSE ANIMALS AREN'T HUMAN, they don't have the same parts as us..

I think it's terrible that animals are being killed, wounded, and put through pain just so that we can have more types of makeup, shampoos, etc. For example, when testing mascara, it is slowly dripped into the eyes of animals like rabits, causing many to go blind, just to see if it would effect us at all. That is not fair at all. It's cruel and inhumane. we can find other ways to test products rather than on innocent animals.

I agree that testing eye makeup on rabbits or feeding oven cleaner to dogs seems unnecessarily cruel.

But if my toddler gets hold of a bottle of, say, JetDry, I want the people on the phone at Poison Control to know what to do to counteract that. And some of what they know comes from experiments on animals.

If I develop a bacterial infection of one of my heart valves, and it needs to be replaced, I'm sure glad we did studies on pigs so my surgeon knows how to do it. (In fact, a replacement heart valve might have belonged to a pig!)

Pigs also teach us about sunscreen and skin cancer.

Mice and monkeys have been sacrificed to teach us about the mechanisms of and possible cures for many diseases: Alzheimers', Parkinsons', diabetes, all kinds of cancers, Ebola.. you name it. They also help us determine the safety and efficacy of vaccines, which save thousands of lives.

Some animal rights activists say that the progression of disease or the workings of cures in animals don't accurately model the same things in humans, so animal testing is worthless. But just try telling that to someone who's had an organ transplant.

Where we can test products on, say, skin cells in a petri dish, I'm all for it. But much of what needs testing is far too complex for such a simple model.

I couldn't find the statistics you cite. Do you have a link?

According to the Foundation for Biomedical Research,

"[a]nimal research has played a vital role in virtually every major medical advance of the last century," [9] and that many major developments that led to Nobel Prizes involved animal research, including the development of penicillin (mice), organ transplant (dogs), and work on poliomyelitis that led to a vaccine (mice, monkeys)."

That doesn't mean we shouldn't do everything we can to reduce the need for, or suffering associated with, animal testing. Where possible, we should use alternative methods, such as testing on cell cultures instead of living beings. We should use sophisticated statistical analysis to reduce the number of animals needed for any experiment. And experiments should be designed to reduce animal suffering.

And you know what? Animal testing doesn't mean that drugs and treatments that work in animals will surely work in humans. In the end, we have to be our own ultimate guinea pigs. But sometimes there is no viable alternative to testing on an animal, and we generally consider performing early experiments on people unethical.

(Here's an overview of the whole controversy from And another one from BBC's Science and Nature: Hot Topics.)

I have one question for most of you: WHERE IS YOUR PROOF?!!!!!!!!! I'm not a fan of animal testing, I think it's cruel. If you want proof, here's some:

"As many as 115 million animals are experimented on and killed in laboratories in the U.S. every year. Much of the experimentation-including pumping chemicals into rats' stomachs, hacking muscle tissue from dogs' thighs, and putting baby monkeys in isolation chambers far from their mothers-is paid for by you, the American taxpayer and consumer, yet you can't visit a laboratory and see how the government has spent your money. You can't even get an accurate count on the number of animals killed every year because experimenters and the government have decided that mice and rats and certain other animals don't even have to be counted.

Animal experimentation is a multibillion-dollar industry fueled by massive public funding and involving a complex web of corporate, government, and university laboratories, cage and food manufacturers, and animal breeders, dealers, and transporters. The industry and its people profit because animals, who cannot defend themselves against abuse, are legally imprisoned and exploited.

Fortunately for animals in laboratories, there are people who care. Some of them work in labs, and when they witness abuse, they call PETA. Thanks to these courageous whistleblowers, PETA's undercover investigators and caseworkers, who sift through reams of scientific and government documents, have exposed what goes on behind laboratory doors."

I recently discovered that PETA actually KILLS the animals that they can't save. Not so humane, huh? They wait one month, although the Humane Society waits one week, they at least give the animals a painless death. PETA, however, put the animals in an industrial FREEZER and lets them die. Call that humane? I call it 'bull'.

For animal testing says:

Animal testing ROCKS cuz human life is more important than animal life! There are laws to protect all animals used for testing from cruelty or bad treatment. And plus most animals are killed before they suffer would you rather suffer or just get killed. Most of the testing is on rats!! do we want rats?
And you can clone animals!!

Animal Testing should be stoped,
because think of this we already have a hole bunch of products why do we need more?
I mean because of the reason we already have all of these products we really don't need any more products.
so tat means we shouldn't be harming all these little deffensless animals.
I' mean for one every single animal known to man kind has feelings just like us humans.
and so think of this, how would you feel if you had no chioce what so ever to be tested on how would you feel?
I'm guessing you probobly wouldn't feel so happy.
And all these animals that are being tested on also have to sufer being tortured.
??What do you think should be done about this??

Animal testing should be stoped.
Why you ask.
Because animal testing isn't right especialy when these scientists are using deffensliss animals. Thats not right.
ANIMALS should be treated the same way as humans.
I mean think about it this issue can almost be realated to slavery except for the fact that this issue is abou animal testing not slavery.
and besides we already have all the products we need, we don't really need to improve or add any products.
and i don't think that harming animals for our own selfish needs is cool at all.
I mean because would you like it if you were part of this testing thing and you were the test subject?
I don't think so.
So why should all these animals be harmed?
Why can't the scientists think of something else to test on.
I mean becaouse they are the smart ones supposidly they can think of something else to test on.
Or better yet since they are the ones making these products and testing them why don't they test these products on eachother?

Testing is wrong, but, like liza said, it can also save our lives. i mean hey, i am in LOVE with animals. but im not willing to risk the lives of millions with diseases, to save a couple animals, i do agree other ways should be found, but, you gotta do what you gotta do. I must say though, animal testing is wrong. but very helpful when we need it most. and thanks, i learned many things from these comments

I believe animal testing is wrong due to the procedures that these helpless and voiceless animals must endure. They cannot speak for themselves, so who is to speak for them? Us. We are a popular species, as we all know, and for us to be the judge of whom is worth nothing and to whom is worth a life; is entirely wrong. Although humans are dominant, does not mean that we can destroy the creations that we are beautifully blessed with.

Hey kids out there.

Take a second and reread what you've said. You've all got some crazy ideas (in a good way... maybe) but it's not enough to just say "OMg LiEk i TotAlLy H8e AniMal teStInG !!! OneoNeonE." Actions speak louder than words and we need to be real about what can be done about this.
Alternatives are not the easiest things to think of, especially practical ones that promotes sustainablilty for everyone. Economy and all.

There's no point in stating an opinion if you cannot justify why you think this or have anyway to at least try to solve the problem. It's great that you all are aware of this injustice, but you're restricting yourselves to an audience with similar interests or opinions to your own. Get the word out there guys. There are more people who are concerned about it just as you are and you'll be supprised what you can do. It's a big issue and only by working together (how oh so cliche) can we make a difference.

We believe animal testing, animaly cruelty and the use of animals for tourism, sport, clothing and food is wrong. However its the way these are carried out which is the most disturbing. Animals and humans are equal, that is how god intended. For those of us that are not relgious remember Charles Darwins theory. We, ourselves, evolved from animals. Is it acceptable to carry out expirements and tests without prior consent, or force labour on humans? No. Its illegal. Then why are such things being forced onto our brothers and sisters?
Have you ever considered that capital punishment is still present in your country. Where we live, if a dog bites, injuring or killing a human it gets 'put down'. How is this justified when a human massacres others and get life in prison? In most cases the dogs are provoked in some way, pyschologically dogs feelings are very similar to humans. While if we are threaten we might speak out, dogs are limited to having to defend themselves through biting. This does not just happen to dogs. Think about it.

As for solutions? We need to consider all people that would be affected by abolishing animals testing - Medical and economic. Many medical breakthroughs have been a result to animal testing. Consider this - and I know it will sound horrible. Criminals, we mean, CRIMINALS. People who have done horrible, horrible things. Mass murders and the like, who would be spending the rest of their lives in jail anyway. Instead of testing on animals, test on these people (in the most non-cruel way possible).

Realistically I don't expect dramatic changes to happen at the click of the post comment button. People are not going to suddenly stop eating meat or stop wearing fur and leather.
We must start small, there is no point conquering the world, becuase it, as a whole, won't listen. But we can make a difference, as members of society. You can make personal decisions (whether to eat meat or not, or wear fur or leather), eat free range eggs, adopt foster animals, report any abuse you see, talk to your friends, parents and teachers, organise debates, talk to your local member of government, post blogs ANYTHING. Don't just sit there, get out and make a difference.

and now that we have gone all cliche and life-coach on you we will leave.
I like pie. (With no animal products in it,ofcourse)

I am a benefactor of animal testing. I feed my pet bullsnake adult lab mice from the control group that a local facility would otherwise discard. The interesting thing is that most of the mice are not native species at all and only really exist in the lab setting. They have short lifespans and are often bright white. Something with these characteristics wouldn't have much of a chance in our Minnesota landscape where a predator would easily pick out the distinctive white out of the greens and brown around it. So I understand animal testing isn't always humane, but are you ready to take in all the orphaned lab mice? Because letting them go free would be just as deadly and cruel as any "treatment" in a lab.

I do understand how people can say it is wrong because animals do haev feelings and goals in life justr as we do, although they may be differant. However, animal testing has helped so much. Many of us prolly writeing on this cite right now wouldnt be here right now if it was not for it. It has helped us find insulin for diabetes, mant vaccines, penicillin, organ translpants is a big 1, the germ theory was also found by animal testing, rubella, TB, and anesthetics so we do not feel things dureing surgury. And it has helped us change the way our medical procedures are to make them better. And really if you had to choose between your family and your pet who would you really choose? I know many of us, includeing me, see our pets as family.. But really who is more important?

Animal testing has become a big issue of debate. Some people agree with it and some disagree. No matter what anyone thinks about the issue, the fact remains that most animal testing is done for a reason and has it's benefits and drawbacks. It's just a matter of whether or not the pro's outweigh the cons

Medical testing on animals is ethical (cosmetics testing is stupid) If you or a family member had a terminal illness and there was a cure would it matter to you that it was tested on "cute little animals" if it could save your life? anyone who has ever taken a vaccine has supported animal research so get down off your soap boxes and think about that.

I am for animal experimentation. The ends justify the means in this issue, I believe, and yes-- animal lives are less valuable than human lives. That being said, animal testing is not done for the sole purpose of benefiting humans; animals are helped by it, too. I see a lot of people saying pretty blatantly, "ANIMAL TESTING IS WRONG!" or, "Don't harm the cute defenseless animals!" but do you even know the implications of your words? Why. Have you ever gotten sick and used medicine to get better? Have you ever gotten vaccines from the moment you were birthed? Guess what? You're a hypocrite now because animal testing saved your life. Or were you too defenseless to intervene? Let's just go with your theory and say that you as a poor, voiceless baby had no choice when the doctor injected you with multiple vaccines to prevent you from getting sick. So just because you said nothing, does that mean it wasn't done in your best interest? Animals in experiments have a purpose. A dog with cancer may not be able to comprehend that it will die without treatment and it may not be able to consent the administration of a vaccine, but that does not mean that that dog should go untreated. The animals tested are able to reproduce quickly so results can come back fast and they are not endangered or rare species. Some may die during the experiment and some may not, but those results will be recorded for further trials to find cures that can save millions of lives. In addition, with the invention of more and more treatments for various conditions, animal trials will become obsolete because the cures will have already been developed. I've put a lot of thought into my opinion of this and I've come to the conclusion that animal testing is a necessity right now. Unless there are several brave souls out there that are willing to try untested drugs, or someone discovers a miracle cure-all or a machine that predicts human reactions to drugs, animals are the best predictors for how our bodies will respond to them.

Animal testing is a rather cruel act by humans, but at the same time it saves many human lives with the drugs tested and manufactured. So this debate is a never ending one and will always to have supporters on both ends of the spectrum. I personally believe that it is wrong, because I own a dog and I love it as much as I love my family.
