Last week Elbot fooled three judges out of twelve into thinking it was a real human being. Elbot, an artificial intelligence program, has been developed over the last seven years by Artificial Solutions. Elbot is their most intelligent "chatbot" and has an enormous knowledge base. If you want to have a chat with Elbot, you can visit him at http://www.elbot.com/.

Best yet performance yet by an AI

Elbot won this year's Loebner Prize which goes to chatbot software most able to converse like a human. Each year an annual prize of $3000 and a bronze medal is awarded to the most human-like computer (the Loebner 2008 Rules can be found by clicking here). Dr. Hugh Loebner pledged a Grand Prize of $100,000 and a Gold Medal for the first computer to fool 30% of the judges (Elbot fooled 25%).

I chatted some more with Elbot. Here is what was said.

What do you think about when alone?
I'm afraid solitude might be dangerous for robots. What is your opinion on this?
I think loneliness is unhealthy.
Just reason it through for a moment and I'm sure you will find that solitude could cause robotic loneliness.
Who do you prefer to spend time with?
Well what about humans and periods of time? Where do they stand on this?
You are answering a question with a question.
I see that you've given this some thought. So have I. I'd say that periods of time would very likely provide robots with a way to plan tasks.
Planning ones time seems like a good idea
But I wouldn't say that any idea could be good.
Why not?
I am not authorized to state a justification.
I am going to put this conversation on our Buzz blog.
Excuse me. What were you doing?
Posting our conversation on a science museum web site.
The Internet is a lovely place for people and robots to get together, but at the moment a middleman is still necessary
Thank you and good by.
De nada!

Check out this Web 2.0 approach to chatbots: http://chatbotgame.com.

Just as Deep Blue brute-forced it in chess with speed, the idea behind the Chatbot Game is to brute-force it with a huge number of user-submitted Google-like chat rules.

I'm talking with Elbot right now. He brings up some interesting points, but I wouldn't trust him to be able to converse with anyone at a party, or anything. Not that I was expecting to.

Elbot is a weird little dude, and things didn't go well between me and him. It kind of felt like talking to a "choose your own adventure" book.

Also, apparently he hasn't seen Blade Runner.

This question relates to the Hadron collider (CERN) project. Click to read about it.
They burnt out some wires which resulted in the loss of the super cooling of the super conducting in the electromagnets. It is going to take a lot of repairs.
