2001 flood

In 2001, the Mississippi River crested twice at downtown St. Paul, and both were record crests: 23.76 feet on April 16, and 23.6 feet on April 30. It's very possible that we'll see a double crest this year, too.

The Science Museum of Minnesota opened in its current location in 2000, and 2001 was our first big flood experience. (Click on the slideshow to stop it and view bigger images.)

I remember this flood quite well. I was 6 years old and my parents took me to see the flood. We all stood on the high bridge and watched the water, That was my first time really seeing a flood and the power of the Great Mississippi River,

I was working at SMM then. I remember watching from the big windows as parents let their kids play in flood water filled with Flying Spaghetti Monster knows what. Not the greatest moment in the History of Hygiene.
